PositionSummary
This position provides comprehensive clinical sensorimotor evaluation andvisual assessment of ophthalmology patients with ocular motility dysfunction orrelated neuromuscular anomalies. Services include diagnostic evaluation,planning, teaching, participation in research, and implementing appropriateorthoptic treatment programs and follow-up for selected patients under thesupervision of the attending physician.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Evaluate assigned patients in terms of current or potentialproblems with vision, muscle balance, binocular sensory relationships, orrelated ocular disorders. Provide fundamental assessment of fusional abilityand potential, including use of specific diagnostic instruments.
  • Plan and implement treatment programs for selected patientsbased on evaluation results.
  • Evaluate ongoing therapy, institute appropriate changes inthe management plan and provide instruction to parents and patients regardingthe rationale and methods necessary to carry out therapy.
  • Conduct an orthoptic clinic that includes a referral basefrom internal and external ophthalmologists.
  • Teach, give didactic lectures, and provide clinicalinstruction to residents, fellows, and students, and participate in assignedclinics, rounds, meetings, conferences, and in-services, including educationalactivities for the ophthalmology team.
  • Comply with the American Orthoptic Council (AOC) Code ofEthics.
  • Administer eye drops under the direction of the physicianand maintain medication supply with compliance to medication expiration andpharmacy requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in specialprojects as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in science or related field, plus 2 years in a post-graduate program and a minimum of 2 years of experience is preferred.
  • Board certification by the American Association of Certified Orthoptists is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ophthalmology, ocular anatomy, neuro-anatomy, and pharmacologic agents used in ophthalmology.
  • JCAHPO certification is preferred.
