What is an operator in training?

Operator In Training (OIT) positions are entry-level roles designed for individuals who are learning how to operate and maintain equipment or systems, typically in fields such as water treatment, wastewater management, or manufacturing. These roles provide hands-on experience under the supervision of certified operators and often include classroom or on-the-job training to prepare for certification exams. The goal is to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to advance to fully certified operator positions. OITs are responsible for assisting with daily operations, monitoring equipment, and following safety protocols while learning industry standards and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operator in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operator In Training, you need a basic understanding of mechanical or technical processes, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a willingness to learn on the job. Familiarity with safety protocols, control systems, and equipment monitoring tools is typically required, and some positions may require OSHA or industry-specific certifications. Attention to detail, strong communication, and a proactive attitude help you excel in both team settings and when troubleshooting issues. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure safe, efficient operations and successful progression to fully qualified operator roles.

What are some typical challenges faced by an operator in training, and how can they be successfully overcome?

As an Operator In Training, one common challenge is adapting to the fast-paced environment and learning to operate complex machinery or systems safely and efficiently. New operators often need to quickly absorb technical information, follow strict safety protocols, and develop troubleshooting skills while working under supervision. Success in this role typically comes from actively seeking feedback, asking questions, and participating in hands-on training sessions. Building strong communication with experienced operators and supervisors also helps accelerate learning and fosters a supportive atmosphere for growth.

What sets IREG apart is our integrated approach, bringing together development, construction, and operations to create high-performing communities across affordable housing, workforce housing, and market-rate living, including multifamily, active adult, independent living, assisted living, and memory care.

At IREG, innovation isnโ€™t just what we build, itโ€™s how we operate, grow, and develop our people.

We build communities and develop the people who lead them.

Community: Watermere at Woodland Lakes

Location: Conroe, Texas

Employment Type: Full-Time

Launch Your Leadership Career in Senior Living

Are you ready to step into leadership and build a career with real impact?

At Integrated Real Estate Group (IREG), our Manager in Training (MIT) Program is designed to develop the next generation of leaders in senior living.

This is more than a job - itโ€™s a structured leadership pathway designed to prepare you to help manage and operate a senior living community.

Youโ€™ll gain hands-on experience, mentorship from experienced leaders, and exposure to the operational, financial, sales, people, and resident-facing sides of the business.

The goal is to build the skills and experience needed to grow into roles such as Executive Director, Business Office Manager, Operations Leader, or other community leadership opportunities.

About the Opportunity

As a Manager in Training, youโ€™ll work alongside experienced community leaders while gaining firsthand exposure to what it takes to operate a successful senior living community.

Youโ€™ll learn how teams, residents, finances, sales, compliance, staffing, and daily operations all work together.

This isnโ€™t a program where youโ€™ll spend your time observing from the sidelines.

Youโ€™ll participate in real community operations, take ownership of projects, interact with residents and families, support department leaders, and develop the judgment and business understanding required to take on increasing leadership responsibility.

This role is ideal for an emerging professional who wants broad business exposure, hands-on leadership development, and a clear path for long-term career growth.

What Youโ€™ll Own

Through hands-on training and real-world experience, you will:

  • Learn the day-to-day operations of a senior living community
  • Work directly with the Executive Director and community leadership team
  • Support leadership in staff management, scheduling, and team development
  • Assist with resident experience, satisfaction, and family communication
  • Gain exposure to budgeting, financial performance, resident billing, and operating results
  • Learn business office functions including payroll, accounts payable, and administrative operations
  • Understand and support compliance with state and regulatory requirements
  • Partner with leadership on sales, tours, occupancy, and community growth initiatives
  • Gain exposure to recruiting, onboarding, and employee administration
  • Participate in community meetings, resident events, and operational initiatives
  • Support Manager on Duty responsibilities as assigned
  • Take ownership of projects that impact community performance
  • Build leadership skills in communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and accountability

You wonโ€™t be sitting on the sidelines - youโ€™ll be actively involved in running the business.

What Success Looks Like
  • You actively seek opportunities to learn and take on responsibility
  • You develop an understanding of how the major areas of a senior living community work together
  • You build strong relationships with residents, families, employees, and leadership
  • You demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, and follow-through
  • You become increasingly comfortable with financial and operational information
  • You ask thoughtful questions and apply feedback quickly
  • You identify problems and help develop solutions
  • You demonstrate the leadership potential and business understanding needed for your next opportunity within IREG
Who This Role Is For

Weโ€™re looking for driven, people-focused individuals who want to grow into leadership:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Hospitality, Management, Finance, or a related field preferred
  • 1โ€“3 years of experience in hospitality, property management, healthcare, retail, operations, customer service, or another people-focused environment preferred
  • Recent graduates with strong internships, leadership experience, or relevant work experience are encouraged to apply
  • Strong leadership potential and desire to grow into a management role
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Adaptable and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfortable working with numbers, business systems, and operational information
  • Professional judgment and ability to handle confidential information
  • Genuine interest in working with older adults and supporting the resident experience
  • Desire to build a long-term career in operations and leadership
Community-Specific Requirements
  • [Weekend availability required]
  • [Manager on Duty rotation required]
  • [Valid Driverโ€™s License required]
  • [Travel between communities required]
  • [Other program/community-specific requirement]
What Sets You Apart
  • Youโ€™re curious about how the entire business operates
  • You want more than a narrow entry-level role
  • You take initiative and ownership even while youโ€™re learning
  • Youโ€™re comfortable interacting with people at every level of an organization
  • You want feedback and apply it
  • You can balance people, numbers, and operational priorities
  • Youโ€™re ambitious, adaptable, and willing to learn
  • Youโ€™re looking for a career path, not simply your next job
Why This Role

Our communities are home to residents who rely on us for quality, service, connection, and an exceptional living experience.

As a Manager in Training, youโ€™ll learn how strong leaders bring together people, operations, financial performance, resident experience, and regulatory requirements to create a successful community.

Compensation & Benefits

At IREG, we invest in our people, because strong leaders build strong communities.

Full-Time Employees receive:

  • Competitive hourly pay with growth potential
  • Paid Holidays available upon hire
  • ZayZoon Access available immediately - access up to 50% of your earned wages on demand
