Can an operations manager be a project manager?

An operations manager can often transition into a project manager role since both positions require strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills. However, project managers typically focus on specific projects with defined goals and timelines, often requiring certifications like PMP. Experience in project planning, scheduling, and risk management is also beneficial for such a transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an operations manager project manager?

To thrive as an Operations Manager Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, process optimization, and operational strategy, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as Asana, Trello, or MS Project), ERP systems, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma is highly valuable. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you motivate teams and manage cross-functional initiatives. These abilities ensure projects are delivered efficiently, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

Who makes more money, an operations manager or a project manager?

Typically, operations managers tend to earn higher salaries than project managers due to their broader responsibilities overseeing ongoing business functions. However, salaries vary based on industry, experience, location, and company size, with project managers often earning competitive wages especially when managing large or complex projects. Both roles may require certifications like PMP or Six Sigma, which can influence compensation.

How does an operations manager project manager balance strategic oversight with hands-on project execution?

This dual responsibility means regularly aligning project objectives with organizational goals while also staying closely involved in timelines, budgets, and team coordination. Success in this role often depends on strong time management, clear communication, and the ability to delegate effectively. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as finance, HR, and technical departments—is common, ensuring that operations run smoothly while projects are delivered on time. Over time, professionals in this role can advance to senior leadership positions by demonstrating their ability to drive both operational excellence and successful project outcomes.

Clifton Park, NY

Full-time

Re-posted 16 hours ago

Job description

You know how to build successful projects. We're looking for someone ready to build something bigger—a career, a reputation, and eventually a legacy.

Bast Hatfield Construction is searching for an ambitious commercial construction Project Manager who wants more than another project to manage. We want someone who wants to become one of the leaders who defines our company's future. If you can independently lead a complex commercial project, earn the confidence of owners and superintendents, and want a real path toward Project Executive and company leadership, we should talk.

For half a century, Bast Hatfield has earned a reputation for delivering challenging commercial projects throughout New York. Our self-performing capabilities, long-tenured workforce, and reputation for integrity allow our project managers to solve problems instead of fighting bureaucracy. You'll lead commercial projects ranging from approximately $2 million to over $20 million across healthcare, higher education, hospitality, industrial, retail, and public sectors.

What You'll Do
  • Lead multiple commercial construction projects from award through closeout.
  • Build strong relationships with owners, architects, subcontractors, and field leadership.
  • Drive schedule, budget, quality, and profitability.
  • Lead contract negotiations, procurement, change management, and project financials.
  • Coordinate preconstruction, estimating, operations, and field teams.
  • Mentor Assistant Project Managers while growing into larger leadership responsibilities.
  • Identify risks early and solve problems before they impact the project.
Who you are
  • We care more about what you've accomplished than how many years you've worked.
  • Experience leading commercial construction projects as a General Contractor
  • Demonstrated success managing budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and client relationships
  • Ability to think like an owner rather than simply manage paperwork
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Experience with public and private work preferred

We believe exceptional people should be exceptionally rewarded. Compensation is designed to attract and retain top-performing project managers and includes a highly competitive base salary, substantial performance bonuses, profit sharing, and one of the strongest benefits packages in our industry. We invest heavily in ambitious people. High-performing Project Managers have opportunities to advance into Senior Project Manager, Project Executive, Operations Leadership, and executive management. Advancement is based on results—not tenure.
