What does an operations director do?

An Operations Director is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a company or organization, ensuring that business processes run efficiently and effectively. They develop and implement operational policies, manage budgets, and work closely with other executives to align operations with the organization’s strategic goals. Operations Directors also lead teams, monitor key performance indicators, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and profitability.

Your Impact Starts Here

The Operations Director of Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Services is responsible for the strategic development, operational leadership, and full profit and loss accountability for Graham's E&I Services business within the Services Division.

This role combines entrepreneurial leadership with disciplined operational governance to establish and grow a new business line focused on electrical and instrumentation services, including maintenance, turnarounds, sustaining capital projects, and specialty construction services. The Operations Director will build organizational capability, establish market presence, and develop customer relationships while ensuring full alignment with Graham's corporate governance, risk management, safety, and financial oversight requirements.

The successful candidate will possess deep technical expertise in electrical and instrumentation construction and maintenance, a strong industry network, proven operational leadership experience, and a demonstrated ability to build and scale service-based businesses.

Your Role in Building What Matters – From Office to Site
  • Lead Business Growth: Develop and execute strategies that expand Graham's Electrical & Instrumentation Services business across targeted industrial and commercial markets.
  • Build Strategic Customer Relationships: Drive business development activities, strengthen client partnerships, and identify opportunities to increase market share and revenue growth.
  • Champion Self-Perform Delivery: Collaborate with internal stakeholders to expand E&I self-perform capabilities and enhance value across Graham's project and service portfolios.
  • Drive Operational & Financial Performance: Maintain accountability for revenue, profitability, forecasting, resource planning, and the successful execution of E&I services and contracts.
  • Lead Within a Governance Framework: Ensure the business operates in alignment with Graham's governance requirements, delegated authorities, risk management processes, and HSEQ standards.
  • Build a High-Performing Organization: Establish scalable processes, develop operational capability, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
The Right Tools for the Job
  • Education: Degree or diploma in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Business, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and industry experience will be considered.
  • Experience: 15+ years of progressive experience within the electrical and instrumentation services sector, including leadership responsibility for operations, business performance, and growth.
  • Business Leadership: Demonstrated success growing a business unit, service line, or market sector with direct accountability for profitability, strategy execution, and customer development.
  • Industry Knowledge: Strong understanding of electrical and instrumentation construction, maintenance, turnarounds, sustaining capital work, and specialty industrial services.
  • Technical & Functional Skills: Proven ability to develop strategic customer relationships, secure new work, lead operational teams, and make sound commercial decisions within a structured governance environment. Experience with medium-voltage electrical systems is required; exposure to high-voltage generation, transmission, and distribution systems is considered an asset.
