Job description

Controller | Competitive Salary

Owen Holdings, LLC – Carter Lake, IA (near Eppley Airport) | Full-Time, On-Site | Exempt

Own the Numbers for a Steel Manufacturing Enterprise.

Owen Industries is one of the largest steel service centers and structural steel fabricators in the Midwest — and we’ve been at it since 1885. Our Controller sits at the center of it all: managing the accounting function for Owen Industries and Paxton & Vierling Steel Co. (PVS), coordinating across multiple divisions, and serving as the financial backbone for an organization that moves fast and builds big.

This isn’t a role where you’re buried in a back office running reports. You’ll work directly with the CFO and divisional leadership, own the monthly close, lead the annual audit process, and help shape the financial systems and procedures that keep Owen running efficiently. If you’re a sharp, organized accounting professional who wants real ownership and visibility — this is the role.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage all aspects of the accounting function for Owen Holdings, LLC and PVS in accordance with GAAP
  • Lead monthly close activities — account reconciliations, adjusting journal entries, and financial reporting
  • Prepare and manage daily cash management analysis and banking reports
  • Oversee customer credit and work with AR to resolve past-due accounts
  • Coordinate the year-end audit — manage external auditor requests and schedule preparation
  • Assist with annual budget preparation with input from Division General Managers
  • Maintain fixed assets using Asset Keeper Software and oversee monthly inventory cycle counts
  • File and pay state sales tax returns; maintain Employee Benefit Trust accounting records
  • Set up cost centers and Master Data in SAP; upload bi-weekly payroll to the ERP system
  • Assess and improve accounting procedures; develop and maintain departmental SOPs
  • Review budget-to-actual results and communicate variances to leadership

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • 3–5 years of Controller-level experience preferred
  • 2+ years of GAAP accounting experience preferred
  • CPA and public accounting experience with manufacturing clients preferred
  • SAP ERP experience highly preferred
  • Knowledge of Cost Accounting in manufacturing and/or construction
  • Strong Credit and Cash Management skills
  • Highly organized, task-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
  • Clear communicator who can translate financial data into actionable insights for leadership
  • Committed to confidentiality and the highest standards of financial integrity

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Monday–Friday schedule — consistent, predictable hours
  • Health, Dental & Vision insurance
  • Life/AD&D and Short & Long-Term Disability coverage
  • 401(k) after 6 months
  • PTO and paid holidays — accrual begins immediately
  • High visibility role — direct access to CFO and divisional leadership
  • Stable, growing company with 140 years of history and a strong balance sheet

Medical, Dental, Vision, and Disability benefits begin the 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.

Why Owen Industries?

Owen Industries is a family of steel companies — PVS Structures, PVS Metals, MVS Metals, NPS, and others — operating across the Midwest with facilities in Carter Lake, Sioux City, Wahoo, and North Dakota. We’ve fabricated steel for NASA’s Artemis launch structure, nuclear power plants, hospitals, bridges, and commercial buildings across the country. The Controller role sits at the corporate level — you’ll see the whole operation, not just one slice of it.

???????? Veterans — You Belong Here

The discipline and integrity you developed in service align directly with what we value in this role. Owen Industries and PVS are proud to be Veteran-friendly employers.

Ready to Take Ownership?

If you’re a driven accounting professional who wants real ownership, direct visibility, and a stable company that’s been building things since 1885 — apply today — we’d love to hear from you.

Owen is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. All employment decisions are based on qualifications, merit, and business needs — without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
