Description

What Youโ€™ll Do:

As our Operations Analytics Intern, youโ€™ll contribute to the Operations Management Balancing and Interchangeโ€™s (OMBI) mission of supporting 24/7 grid operators by building and refining scheduling and workforce analytics โ€” helping Control Room leadership stay ahead of scheduling conflicts, turnaround risks, and Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) order violations.

Youโ€™ll gain hands-on experience with:

  • Dashboarding and reporting tools such as Power BI and Excel to surface scheduling risks for Control Room leadership
  • Data analysis using SQL and Python to identify scheduling and workforce trends
  • Real-world projects such as system migrations, scenario-based training design, or scheduling health indicators that feed into MISOโ€™s Monthly Ops Metrics Review

A Great Day in This Role Means:

Youโ€™ll typically start your day reviewing overnight scheduling data and checking in with the team on any open questions from the prior shift. From there, you might pull data in SQL, update a Power BI view, or sit in on a working session with schedulers to understand a recurring pain point before you build a fix for it. Most days include some mix of independent analysis and direct conversation with the people who will actually use what you build.

Youโ€™ll know youโ€™re making an impact when your work holds up under real use โ€” when a tool you built keeps getting opened, a process you streamlined keeps getting followed, or a colleague asks you to extend something you made to cover a new use case.

This is a Unique Opportunity Because:

This team sits at the center of MISOโ€™s round-the-clock grid operations, supporting the scheduling and workforce needs of operators who keep the grid running 24/7. Youโ€™ll get direct visibility into how your analysis shapes real decisions for Control Room leadership, giving you a front-row seat to how data and analytics support reliability at scale.

What Youโ€™ll Be Proud to Share:

  • Presented findings directly to Control Room leadership and crossโ€‘functional stakeholders, building confidence speaking to both technical and nonโ€‘technical audiences.
  • Gained handsโ€‘on experience with data analytics, process improvement, and workflow design in a real 24/7 operations environment.
  • Contributed scheduling health indicators that fed directly into MISOโ€™s Monthly Ops Metrics Review.

Qualifications at a Glance:

Term: June 2 โ€“ August 13, 2027 | Full-time | Paid

Location: Carmel, IN | Housing available for qualified students

Academic Level: Undergraduate

Degree: Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or Data Analytics

Required Technical Skills:

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and Power BI

Preferred Skills:

  • Coursework or experience in data analytics, operations management, engineering fundamentals, or process improvement
  • Handsโ€‘on project experience with dashboards, workflow design, system migration, or scenario-based training
  • Prior internship experience in operations, analytics, or reliability environments

By the End of Your Internship, Youโ€™ll Walk Away With:

  • A tangible impact story (e.g., โ€œI built a dashboard that helped Control Room leadership catch a scheduling conflict before it became a problemโ€)
  • Stronger technical skills (dashboarding, data analysis, workflow design) and soft skills (communicating insights to 24/7 operations leadership)
  • A deep understanding of how workforce and scheduling analytics support round-the-clock grid reliability
  • Expanded professional network across MISO and the energy industry
  • A strong rรฉsumรฉ bullet such as: โ€œBuilt scheduling and workforce analytics dashboards for MISOโ€™s 24/7 grid operations team, supporting Control Room decisionโ€‘making and contributing to the Monthly Ops Metrics Review.โ€
