Operating Room Technician Certified

The Operating Room Technician Certified reports to the Director, Surgical Services and assists in nursing care activities under the direction of a registered nurse and according to the policies and procedures of the department. These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assists with planning and implementation of activities related to direct patient care:
  • Assists in individual care plans by providing for the physical comfort, safety, and emotional welfare of the surgical patient.
  • Works cooperatively as a team member with all related departments to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Familiar with and maintains principles of aseptic techniques.

Performs primarily in the role of scrub nurse to include:

  • Prepares room, checks supplies and equipment for the patient.
  • Carries out scrub nurse activities required during the operation to ensure asepsis and patient safety.
  • Assists the primary Registered Nurse circulator with delegated circulating duties.
  • Assists in room clean up between surgical cases at the end of the schedule.
  • Responsible for the preparation and after care of equipment and supplies.
  • Sterilizes surgical equipment according to manufacture recommendations.
  • Assists with taking inventories of all equipment and supplies.
  • Recognizes and acts appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Participates in staff conferences as a member of the Operating Room nursing team.
  • Assists with the orientation process of new staff in the area of clinical expertise.
  • Assists with the revision of the departmental procedures.
  • Shares new knowledge with staff.
  • Helps maintain a clean and orderly environment in the Operating Room.
  • Utilizes and supports hospital and Operating Room policies, rules and regulations.
  • Adheres to fire and safety regulations of the hospital.
  • Maintains strict sharps protocol in the department.
  • Follows and carries out Standard Precautions in the department.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred.
  • Must have completed a Surgical Technology course in Operating Room technique and is able to furnish a record indicating the hours of instruction in basic sciences and aseptic technique required or is able to supply documentation through references of on-the-job training and experience as an Operating Room Technician.
  • Documentation of ongoing education activities is required.
  • Professional membership in professional organization(s) is preferred.
  • Prior experience as an Operating Room Technician preferred.
  • Ability to cooperate effectively with others, a team player required.
  • Ability to relate well to professional and non-professional staff and patients required.
