What is an online SLP?

Online SLPs, or online Speech-Language Pathologists, are licensed professionals who provide speech therapy services via telepractice using video conferencing platforms. They assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders in clients of all ages. Online SLPs use digital tools and interactive activities to deliver therapy sessions, making services accessible to those who may have difficulty attending in-person appointments. This approach offers flexibility and convenience while maintaining effective, personalized care.

What does an online SLP do?

Online speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate and treat patients through virtual portals and other online methods. As an online SLP, you assess patients using a variety of tests to determine what kind of intervention they need, then develop a treatment plan to help the patient improve their speech or other communication skills. Follow up virtual meetings are essential to track the progress of the patient and allow the online SLP to make adjustments to therapy as necessary. Some parents seek online SLPs when they live too far away from a treatment center or to be eligible for in-home treatments. Many online SLPs work directly for school districts, but there are some positions that also work with adults that suffer from speech disorders, such as stroke patients.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an online SLP?

To thrive as an Online Speech-Language Pathologist, you need a master’s degree in speech-language pathology, state licensure, and expertise in diagnosing and treating communication disorders. Familiarity with telepractice platforms, digital assessment tools, and secure documentation systems is essential. Excellent verbal communication, adaptability, and strong organizational skills help build rapport with clients and manage virtual sessions effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality, accessible therapy and ensuring client progress in a remote environment.

What are common challenges faced by online SLPs and how can they be addressed?

Online SLPs often encounter challenges such as engaging clients through virtual platforms, managing technical issues, and maintaining effective communication with caregivers and educators. To address these, SLPs utilize interactive digital resources, establish clear routines for sessions, and collaborate closely with families and school staff through regular updates and training. Staying adaptable and continuously seeking professional development in telepractice also helps online SLPs deliver effective and personalized therapy.

Job description

Step into a rewarding contract opportunity supporting students as a substitute Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) for the first 12 weeks of the school year. Servicing two elementary sites, you’ll play an essential role from August 10th through the end of October, covering for an SLP on FMLA leave. This assignment offers the flexibility of onsite or VOCO (virtual/online) service delivery, making it ideal for professionals seeking variety in their practice. The caseload is substantial, with 117 students, but an assigned Speech-Language Assistant (SLA) will be on hand to help ensure effective delivery of services.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current licensure and certification as an SLP with Certificate of Clinical Competence (SLP-CCC)
  • Experience in a school setting preferred
  • Background in working with larger caseloads and collaborating with support staff (such as SLAs)
  • Familiarity with virtual instruction platforms if choosing the VOCO option
  • Comfortable adapting to multiple sites and varied student needs

Key Duties:

  • Deliver speech and language therapy services in accordance with students’ IEP goals
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and the assigned SLA for optimal student support
  • Maintain detailed documentation and progress reporting per school and state guidelines
  • Administer evaluations, develop therapy plans, and participate in IEP meetings as needed
  • Flexibly adapt to both onsite and remote service delivery formats as necessary

This is a unique opportunity to expand your skills in a dynamic school environment with administrative and para-professional support. If you are ready to make a difference for young learners while taking on the challenge of a larger caseload, submit your application today and take the next step in your SLP career journey!
