Job description

Introduction
The Maryland State Department of Education is dedicated to supporting a world-class educational system that prepares all students for college and career success in the 21st century. With excellent stewardship from our divisions, we oversee State and federal programs that support the needs of a diverse population - students, teachers, principals, and other educators throughout Maryland.
This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

Main Purpose of Job
The Executive Assistant to the State Superintendent of Schools is a pivotal position providing top level office support by overseeing and facilitating the day-to-day operations of the Office of the State Superintendent of Schools. This position will oversee the State Superintendent's schedule, ensuring meticulous coordination, preparation, and execution of all engagements and commitments. The Executive Assistant handles correspondence, inquiries, and messages from internal and external stakeholders, resolving issues promptly while maintaining strong working relationships. This role also involves creating and managing written materials, overseeing document processing, and addressing diverse administrative responsibilities and office operations in alignment with established guidelines. The Executive Assistant also performs other special projects as assigned by the State Superintendent.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience providing administrative support to a senior or executive level manager, one year of this experience must have included office management responsibilities.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.
  • Experience in a State or local government agency.
  • Experience in handling administrative tasks with strong organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Experience in composing and/or proofreading clear, concise, and professional correspondence, emails, and reports.
  • Experience using Google Workspace and Microsoft Suite applications (Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.)
  • Experience using HR and finance systems to approve time and expenses

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must consent to State and FBI (CJIS) background check as a routine procedure for all MSDE employees.
