Student Employee - Chemistry or Instructional Materials Center (IMC)

Hourly Rate: $15.00

Student employees are hired on an as-needed basis, and the number of available positions may change throughout the academic year. This is a pooled position, meaning there is not a single, immediate opening. Instead, applications are collected and reviewed over time, and qualified applicants may be contacted for an interview as positions become available.

Student employment positions are part-time,19 hour-or-less per week, temporary/seasonal appointments. Some positions may require federal work study. The work schedule is dependent upon departmental needs and employee's availability. Typical work hours are between 8 AM - 5 PM, Monday-Friday. Essential Job Functions:

  • Prepare lab materials such as chemical solutions or microbiology media .
  • Assist in coordination of reagents, supplies, and equipment for labs.
  • Set up and take down labs.
  • Conduct cleaning and maintenance checks of lab and safety equipment.
  • Assist with inventory maintenance.
  • Assist with proper handling of chemical or biohazardous waste.
  • Prepare and package on-line lab supplies.
  • Clean glassware and restock them labs.
  • Complete required safety training and compliance checks.
  • Work independently and efficiently.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Meet all eligibility requirements for student employment as determined by Financial Aid. Some positions may require Federal Work Study.
  • One year of high school chemistry or biology, or one semester of college level chemistry or biology.
  • Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and over the phone. Excellent spelling, grammar, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work with individuals from various backgrounds.
  • Maintain confidentiality, be punctual, communicate changes in work schedule in advance.
  • Appropriate attire as discussed for the work environment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
