Job Description

The Automation Engineer develops, tests, and commissions automation programs for automatic operation of power distribution and generation equipment using common programming methods such as ladder logic and function block diagrams. Other typical tasks involve developing human machine interfaces using vendor specific software, establishing communication interface using industrial communication protocols, and programming industry specific controllers and protective equipment

Accountabilities:

  • Hardware configuration and I/O assignment
  • Develop PLC programs for controlling operation of Engine/Generator/Switchgear based on the operating instructions/sequence of operation
  • Develop graphics and communication interfaces for human machine interfaces (HMI)
  • Program gen-set controllers, transducers, and other programmable electrical equipment as required for the project
  • Program multi-function protection relays for electrical equipment protection and control
  • Identify and develop communication interfaces and networks for interfacing with gen-set controllers, engine control modules, MCCs, and protective equipment
  • Participate in in-house testing of the automation programs and customer witness tests
  • Provide on-site and/or remote commissioning assistance to field service technicians during commissioning and startup, participate in site acceptance testing
  • Document and maintain automation programs for archival and future reference
  • Incorporate and comply with applicable company standards and specifications for automation systems
  • Other duties as required by Automation Department Manager
Qualifications

Required Knowledge/Experience: 

  • 2+ years of experience in automation engineering
  • Strong programming skills in ladder logic, function block diagram, HMI development
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Modbus-RTU, and Modbus/TCP
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Basic knowledge of transformers, motors, drives, relays, power breakers, and other components of electrical control systems
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Ability to work long hours during testing and commissioning
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work with others
  • Self-motivated and continuous learning mindset, ability to learn quickly and independently using user manuals and online resources
  • Customer focused
  • Time management and organizational skills

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related field).

Preferred

  • Knowledge of on-site power generation, distribution, and protection
  • Working knowledge of industry standards such as IEC-61850
  • Experience with Allen Bradley controllers and software including but not limited to ControlLogix, CompactLogix, Studio 5000 Logix Designer, FactoryTalk View Studio (Site Edition and Machine Edition), RSLinx
  • Familiarity with other common PLC/HMI programming hardware and software such as Schneider Electric, Siemens, and Emerson/GE
  • Familiarity with redundant controllers

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • FLSA executive and professional positions paid on a salary basis, where project requirements and tight client deadlines may require workweeks over forty (40) hours (including weekends or holidays)
  • This role will be in office setting, however frequent visits to the production floor are required to oversee operations, ensure compliance and safety standards.
    • Mobility: Ability to move around the manufacturing plant, including walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
    • Manual Dexterity: Occasional use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
    • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry items up to twenty-five (25) pounds. All lifting should be done following OSHA standards.
    • Visual and Auditory Requirements: Must be able to see and hear well enough to navigate the plant safely and communicate effectively with team members.
