| Aspect | Online Accounting Instructor | Online Bookkeeper |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Accounting degree, teaching certifications (optional) | Bookkeeping certification, experience in accounting software |
| Work Environment | Online teaching platforms, educational institutions | Remote, client or business-specific accounting tasks |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Educational institutions, online course providers | Small businesses, accounting firms, freelance clients |
| Primary Focus | Teaching accounting principles and concepts | Recording financial transactions and maintaining ledgers |
Online Accounting Instructors primarily focus on teaching accounting concepts through online platforms, often working for educational institutions or course providers. In contrast, online bookkeepers handle actual financial record-keeping for clients or businesses. While both roles require accounting knowledge, instructors emphasize education, whereas bookkeepers focus on practical bookkeeping tasks.
Online accounting instructors teach students the principles of finance and accounting in a virtual classroom. Like any instructor, your duties and responsibilities as an online accounting instructor include preparing and teaching lessons in accordance with the class requirements and syllabus. You are expected to give and grade exams, evaluate student work, provide feedback to help them better understand the material, and offer academic and career advice to students. Since you deliver your course via the web, you need to be very comfortable working in online learning management systems. Most of these systems offer access to extensive user communities.
