Job description

Job Responsibilities This employee will serve as the agency-wide leader for volunteer engagement and stewardship initiatives, providing strategic direction, oversight, and coordination of volunteer programs across all divisions of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). Job Duties Include: Developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive agency-wide volunteer program that supports the mission, strategic priorities, and operational needs of the SCDNR. Serving as the agency's central coordinator and subject matter expert for volunteer engagement, ensuring consistency in volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, supervision, recognition, risk management, and reporting across all divisions and regions.

Collaborating with division directors, program managers, and field staff to identify volunteer opportunities that support conservation, education, research, habitat management, citizen science, public outreach, recreation, and stewardship initiatives. Developing and maintaining agency-wide volunteer policies, procedures, training programs, and performance metrics. Establishing and maintaining volunteer management systems to track participation, hours, certifications, training completion, and program outcomes.

Leading volunteer recruitment campaigns, developing partnerships with community organizations and educational institutions, and creating recognition programs that promote volunteer retention and engagement. Supporting agency-wide strategic planning efforts by coordinating planning activities, facilitating cross-divisional collaboration, tracking strategic objectives, and monitoring performance measures. Assisting agency leadership with implementation of strategic initiatives, organizational assessments, annual reporting, and continuous improvement efforts.

Developing and maintaining partnerships with nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, conservation groups, local governments, and community organizations to support volunteer recruitment, stewardship initiatives, and public engagement opportunities. Managing volunteer-related records, budgets, grants, contracts, reports, and special projects as assigned. Minimum and Additional Requirements A bachelor's degree and relevant program experience.

Preferred Qualifications A bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies or a similar field, in addition to relevant work experience, three (3) or more years preferred. Ability to multi-task, be a self-starter, and communicate and coordinate with program managers throughout SCDNR. Proficient in Microsoft Office products, to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
