Their primary responsibility is to cultivate relationships with major donors, solicit large gifts, and manage a portfolio of prospective supporters. Unlike full-time staff, they may be engaged for specific campaigns, events, or periods of high fundraising activity. This role requires strong communication skills, experience in fundraising, and the ability to build trust with donors quickly. On Call Major Gift Officers play a crucial role in helping organizations meet their financial goals.

How does an on call major gift officer balance relationship-building with multiple donors while managing a flexible, as-needed schedule?

As an On Call Major Gift Officer, you will often work with several high-value donors, sometimes on short notice, requiring strong organizational skills and adaptability. The flexible nature of the role means you'll need to efficiently prioritize donor outreach, stewardship, and follow-up activities, often outside typical business hours. Success in this position comes from maintaining detailed records, clear communication with fundraising colleagues, and staying proactive about scheduling meetings and updates with both donors and your team. Collaboration with program staff and leadership is also key to crafting compelling proposals and updates tailored to each donor's interests.

Familiarity with donor management systems like Raiser's Edge or Salesforce NPSP, as well as knowledge of fundraising regulations, is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive communication, and the ability to build long-term relationships set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for cultivating major donors, meeting fundraising goals, and advancing the organization's mission.
