What is an On Call CIO?

An On Call CIO (Chief Information Officer) is an experienced technology executive who provides strategic IT leadership and guidance to organizations on a flexible or part-time basis. Unlike a full-time CIO, an On Call CIO is available as needed to advise on technology strategy, oversee IT projects, manage risk, or troubleshoot critical issues. This arrangement helps businesses access high-level expertise without the cost of a full-time executive, making it ideal for small to midsize companies or those undergoing transitions.

How does an On Call CIO typically interact with existing IT teams and leadership when providing strategic guidance?

An On Call CIO works closely with in-house IT teams and executive leadership, acting as a trusted advisor rather than a permanent team member. They assess current technology strategies, identify areas for improvement, and collaborate with internal staff to implement best practices. Open communication and relationship-building are essential, as the On Call CIO must quickly understand organizational culture, existing workflows, and pain points. This role often involves facilitating workshops, leading strategy sessions, and providing executive-level recommendations tailored to the company's goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an On Call CIO, and why are they important?

To thrive as an On Call CIO, you need extensive experience in IT strategy, business technology alignment, and executive leadership, often supported by a degree in information technology or business and prior C-level experience. Familiarity with enterprise systems, cloud platforms, cybersecurity frameworks, and certifications such as CISSP or PMP are commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you quickly assess situations and guide organizations through critical decisions. These skills are vital for delivering strategic guidance and maintaining operational stability during transitional or high-pressure periods.
