Elementary School Library Aide Job Description

The OIS Library Aide supports the daily operations of the school library/media center by assisting students and staff in maintaining an organized, welcoming, and effective learning environment. The Library Aide promotes student literacy, supports instructional activities, and assists with circulation, technology, and clerical responsibilities to ensure efficient library services for the school community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist students and staff in locating library materials, resources, and technology tools.
  • Circulate library materials, including checking items in and out and maintaining accurate records through the library management system.
  • Shelve, organize, and maintain library collections in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining an orderly, safe, and student-centered library environment.
  • Assist with library visits, student supervision, and instructional activities as directed.
  • Prepare and maintain displays, bulletin boards, and promotional materials to encourage literacy and student engagement.
  • Process new library materials, including labeling, covering, and inventory management.
  • Regularly reviews and culls library materials according to established guidelines, removing outdated, damaged, or low-circulation items to maintain a relevant and accessible collection.
  • Perform routine clerical duties, including filing, copying, data entry, and responding to inquiries.
  • Assist with technology support for students and staff using library equipment and digital resources.
  • Support school literacy initiatives, book fairs, reading programs, and special library events.
  • Monitor and reinforce appropriate student behavior in accordance with school expectations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information in compliance with district policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate positively with students, staff, families, and administration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 year degree or high school diploma with successful completion of District assessment.
    • Assessment consists of three sections: ย general knowledge, mathematics, and reading.
  • Experience working with elementary-aged children preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic library procedures, technology applications, and office practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a school environment and maintain professionalism at all times.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and shelve books and materials throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

  • Building Principal


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:ย 
178 days per year, 5.75 hours per day, 5 days per weekย 

Rate of Pay:

$17.00/hour with 4 year college degree

$16.00/hour with 60 college credits (Associates degree)

$15.00/hour with no college degree (high school diploma)
