Department Overview

The Perinatal Newborn Float Pool offers a unique opportunity to provide comprehensive, family-centered care across OHSU's specialized Women's Services units. Float pool nurses care for patients throughout the perinatal continuum, supporting families from labor and birth through postpartum recovery while collaborating with highly skilled interdisciplinary teams.

The Labor & Delivery Unit includes 12 labor rooms, a 4-bed triage area, three dedicated operating rooms, and a two-bay PACU. Nurses care for a diverse patient population ranging from low-intervention and water births supported by a robust midwifery practice to the region's most medically complex maternal and fetal patients. Working alongside maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, and specialty care coordinators, nurses provide innovative, evidence-based care utilizing the latest advances in obstetric and neonatal medicine.

The Mother Baby Unit is a 27-bed unit providing postpartum, antepartum, and gynecologic care for low- and high-risk patients. Nurses deliver compassionate, culturally responsive, family-centered care to mothers, newborns, antepartum patients, and surgical gynecology patients with varying levels of acuity.

Float pool nurses play an integral role in maintaining continuity of care while supporting the mission of providing safe, high-quality outcomes for patients and families.

Function/Duties of Position

The Labor & delivery and Mother Baby Units combined provide intrapartum, antepartum and newborn care to low and at-risk populations.  Care is provided based on acuity, patient type and is in line with the Association of Obstetric, Women's Health and Neonatal Nurses Guidelines for patients care (AWHONN).

• 80% of the nurses on this unit hold advanced certifications.

• This is a night shift only position. There are no rotations between night and day shift.

Required Qualifications

• ACLS Certification
• One year of recent labor & delivery or LDRP experience  
• Will consider candidates with 1-year recent experience in an adult ICU, emergency department or postpartum; New graduates: recent Capstone experience in labor & delivery will also be taken into consideration in lieu of experience.   
• Current NRP certification at time of hire
• BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
• ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
• Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
• Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
• BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation 

Preferred Qualifications

• 1-2 years previous experience in a high-risk obstetric labor & delivery unit 
• Fluency in Spanish or other languages 
• Inpatient obstetric or advanced fetal monitoring certification 
• Surgical circulating and surgical scrub experience also desirable

Additional Details

Length of Orientation - Experienced Nurse

• External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
• Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.

Length of Orientation - New Graduate Nurse

• External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
• Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Residency Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for about 10-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
