The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location within the GES Global Engineering Services division.

The Project Engineer provides Project Management Office (PMO) support for capital project teams across Abbott and Global Engineering Services (GES). This role applies engineering knowledge, project management principles, analytical problem-solving, and business acumen to support successful delivery of capital projects and programs throughout their lifecycle.

This role supports the consistent application of project management standards, governance processes, tools, and best practices throughout the capital project lifecycle, while serving as a key resource to project managers, engineering teams, and business stakeholders.

The Project Engineer independently supports multiple concurrent projects and initiatives, facilitates planning and risk management activities, develops project controls and reporting mechanisms, and contributes to continuous improvement of project delivery processes. The position requires strong organizational, technical, financial, and communication skills, with the ability to identify risks, evaluate alternatives, recommend solutions, and drive effective project outcomes.

What You'll Work On:

PMO Governance and Project Support

  • Provide PMO support to capital project teams across Abbott divisions and Global Engineering Services (GES).
  • Support project governance activities including project initiation, planning, approvals, execution, monitoring, and project closeout.
  • Assist project teams with project documentation, reporting, metrics, and compliance with PMO standards and best practices.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to support project planning, execution, and governance requirements.
  • Support the development and maintenance of project management tools, templates, procedures, and guidance materials.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, dashboards, and project status updates for management and stakeholders.
  • Build effective working relationships across functions and organizational levels to support project objectives.

Risk Management and Front-End Planning

  • Facilitate project schedule and cost risk assessments, including Monte Carlo simulations, for major capital projects.
  • Coordinate and facilitate Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI) assessments for Corporate Engineering and other Abbott organizations.
  • Review Front-End Planning (FEP) deliverables and project documentation to ensure alignment with governance requirements and assessment criteria.
  • Assist project teams in identifying, documenting, and managing project risks and opportunities.
  • Identifies and communicates technical, schedule, cost, governance, and organizational risks and their potential impacts to project success.

Process Improvements and Knowledge Management

  • Support ongoing PMO and capital project process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain business process documentation, workflows, process maps, standards, and best practices.
  • Contribute to cross-functional teams and promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, accountability, and alignment with business objectives.
  • Manage and maintain Front-End Planning resources, tools, and reference materials for Corporate Engineering.
  • Maintain and enhance PMO knowledge management resources, SharePoint sites, templates, and project management documentation.
  • Provide guidance and support to less experienced project team members in project planning, reporting, and governance activities.
  • Support training initiatives related to project management standards, PMO tools, and capital project delivery processes

Capital Planning Support

  • Support the Request for Capital Expenditure (RCE) process through documentation, process improvements, and administrative support.
  • Assist with the collection, organization, and analysis of project and portfolio data.
  • Support capital program reporting and portfolio management activities as required.

Technical and Innovation

  • Apply engineering and project management knowledge to support complex capital projects and programs.
  • Utilize project management tools and technologies to improve efficiency, visibility, and project execution performance.
  • Analyze business processes and recommend improvements that enhance project delivery and governance effectiveness.
  • Apply analytical and problem-solving skills to support project teams in addressing complex project management challenges.
  • Benchmark industry and internal best practices to improve PMO capabilities.
  • Support the evaluation of emerging tools, technologies, and methodologies that enhance project delivery and PMO performance.
  • Collaborate across engineering, operations, finance, quality, and other functions to support successful capital project outcomes.
  • Integrate technical and business considerations when evaluating project alternatives and recommending process improvements.

Compliance

  • Support adherence to Abbott Engineering Standards, EHS&E requirements, quality systems, and applicable regulatory requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support the use of approved project management and engineering processes to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance.
  • Maintain awareness of project risks, quality considerations, and governance requirements associated with capital project execution.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors Degree in Engineering, science, or closely related discipline is desired, or equivalent technical experience plus demonstrated competence, with a desired 3+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Project, SharePoint, and Microsoft 365 tools.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through presentations, reports, process documentation, and stakeholder interactions.
  • Possesses a strong technical knowledge and application of concepts, practices, and procedures. Works on problems of complex scope where analysis of situations or data involves multiple competing factors.
  • Listens to and understands others' points of view and articulates tactfully and respectfully one's own perspective orally, in writing, and in presentations.
  • Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced goal-driven environment and 0ossesses interpersonal skills to negotiate and reconcile differences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of significant engineering and/or operational experience.
  • Experience supporting capital project execution in a health care, medical devices, or regulated industry environment is preferred
  • Capital construction and/or capital project experience preferred.
  • Experience with PDRI, Front-End Planning (FEP), risk management, or project controls processes preferred.
  • Has demonstrated competency with financial systems is preferred.
