Offensive Security Engineer Remote and Penetration Tester roles share overlapping skills and certifications like OSCP and CEH. However, Offensive Security Engineers typically work within security teams on ongoing security infrastructure, often remotely, focusing on offensive security strategies. Penetration Testers usually perform specific security assessments, sometimes on-site, and may have a broader consulting focus. Both roles are vital in cybersecurity but differ in scope and work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Offensive Security Engineer (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offensive Security Engineer (Remote), you need strong expertise in penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, and cybersecurity principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Metasploit, Burp Suite, and Kali Linux, as well as certifications such as OSCP or CEH, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective written communication are critical soft skills for success in this role. These abilities are essential for identifying vulnerabilities, reporting findings clearly, and helping organizations strengthen their security posture against evolving threats.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Offensive Security Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Offensive Security Engineers often face challenges such as coordinating effectively with geographically dispersed teams, maintaining secure access to sensitive systems, and staying updated on rapidly evolving threat landscapes. Overcoming these hurdles typically involves strong communication skills, leveraging secure collaboration tools, and establishing regular check-ins with colleagues. Additionally, continuous learning through online resources and industry forums is vital to remain effective and proactive in identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities.

What does an Offensive Security Engineer do, especially when working remotely?

An Offensive Security Engineer is responsible for proactively identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities in an organization’s systems, networks, and applications. Working remotely, they perform penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, and simulated cyberattacks to discover weaknesses before malicious actors can exploit them. They also provide detailed reports and recommendations to help organizations improve their overall security posture. Job description

Innovation Starts With You

Propel your career at Belden, where innovation creates possibilities-for our people, our customers, and the communities we serve. We connect people, information, and ideas to solve the world's most complex connectivity challenges, turning curiosity into meaningful impact. Here, you'll take on work that challenges you, supports your growth, and empowers you to shape what's next. You'll collaborate with global teams, gain diverse perspectives, and contribute to solutions that extend beyond our business-creating value in the world around us.

Together, we are shaping the future of digitization and paving the way for the next generation of innovation.

The Security Strategy Principal role is the key technical consultant for the VP, Security Products within Belden's Innovation organization. While reviewing market trends for OT security, and benchmarking Belden's capabilities with leading organizations in this space, The Security Strategy Principal will keep the VP, Security Products informed about all news related to OT security, so decisions are taking accordingly. This role handles multiple concurrent initiatives: M&A point of view preparation, partner solution evaluation to complement Belden's security portfolio, drafting thought-leadership documentation to be used internally and externally by Belden, leading innovative concepts to help Belden be differentiated in the OT security market, and more. An important deliverable of this role, which will need to be kept evergreen, is the creation of the "Belden Products/Solutions Security Manual".

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop and maintain Belden's multi-year security strategy and strategic narrative aligned to company growth and target verticals.
  • Identify security market inflection points (OT/ICS cybersecurity, convergence, secure remote access, segmentation, visibility, managed services) and recommend strategic responses.
  • Establish executive-ready points of view, strategy decks, and internal alignment materials.
  • Partner with Product Management to translate strategy into portfolio priorities and roadmap themes.
  • Lead build/buy/partner assessments; support M&A and partnership diligence from a security market/technology standpoint.
  • Define strategic requirements for platform capabilities (identity, policy, telemetry, analytics, secure-by-design processes).
  • Engage strategic customers to understand risk drivers and buying criteria. Represent Belden as an OT security Subject Matter Exprt (SME).
  • Build relationships with key ecosystem players (technology partners, system integrators, cloud/edge platforms) and help shape joint-value propositions.
  • Support executive briefings, key pursuits, and escalations where security strategy is central.
  • Track and interpret relevant standards and regulatory drivers affecting customers (e.g., IEC 62443 concepts, NERC CIP security controls, EU CRA / NIS2 themes, sector-specific requirements where applicable).
  • Translate external requirements into internal guidance for product/solution direction and messaging.
  • Create repeatable frameworks for the Belden Security Strategy: segmentation models, reference architecture at the strategic level, maturity models, and positioning guidance.
Knowledge & Experience requiredEducation & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, cybersecurity, or related field (advanced degree preferred.)
  • 12+ years in cybersecurity strategy, product strategy, security architecture, or security leadership in networking/industrial/critical infrastructure contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence executive stakeholders and drive cross-functional strategic initiatives without direct authority.
  • Strong working knowledge of network security, identity/policy concepts, and security telemetry/monitoring; familiarity with IT/OT convergence challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills: can turn complex security topics into clear business decisions and narratives.
  • Strong networking fundamentals (switching/routing, VLANs, ACLs, NAT, VPNs, firewalls) and security fundamentals (identity, certificates, logging, vulnerability management).
  • Experience in creating technical / thought-leadership documentation such as white papers, keynotes, blog posts, videos, podcasts, etc. surrounding the OT security topic.
  • Ability to work across teams and influence outcomes without direct authority.
  • OT/ICS security experience (industrial networks, Purdue model, segmentation strategies, remote access patterns for plants, SIEM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with IEC 62443, NIST SP 800, and common compliance/customer audit expectations.
  • Experience with SIEM integrations (Syslog, Splunk, Sentinel, QRadar), NAC/identity, IDS use cases (Dragos, Claroty, Nozomi Networks, etc.) and zero trust concepts.
  • Experience supporting M&A / partner diligence, strategy consulting, or corporate strategy for security.
  • Certifications (nice to have): CISSP, CISM, GICSP, IEC 62443, or equivalent.
Essentials
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required to perform the duties of the role (30% frequency of travel)
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, Visio, SharePoint) plus proficiency with platforms for CRM (e.g. Salesforce), ticket management (e.g. Jira) and knowledge sharing (e.g. Confluence)
  • English fluency to business standard essential.
  • Demonstrate Belden values
Role Critical Competencies
  • Strategic thinking and structured problem solving
  • Executive communication and storytelling
  • Market sensing and competitive analysis
  • Partner/ecosystem mindset
  • Ability to translate customer risk into product/solution direction
  • High judgment and pragmatism in ambiguous environments

Applicants can expect a base compensation range of $170,000 - $200,000 annually, plus benefits and additional incentives based on the level of the role.  This is the reasonable estimate that Belden believes it might pay for this job based on applicable circumstances at the time of posting. Belden may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range as permitted by law, and commensurate with the applicant's experience, qualifications, and geographical location.

Belden also offers hybrid and remote work practices where feasible and provides employees with benefits that could include health/dental/vision, long term/short term disability, life insurance, HSA/FSA, matching retirement plans, paid vacation, parental leave, employee stock purchase plan, paid leave for volunteer work in your community, training opportunities, professional talent management and succession planning, corporate health well-being initiatives and a work culture which includes commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and sustainability!
