Ocpp information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OCPP Specialist, you need strong knowledge of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, networking protocols, and a background in software engineering or IT. Familiarity with OCPP standards, REST APIs, network security, and tools like Postman or Wireshark is typically required, along with relevant certifications in networking or EV charging technologies. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure reliable integration and operation of EV charging systems, supporting the growth of sustainable transportation networks.

How does an OCPP specialist typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in the deployment of EV charging solutions?

An OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) specialist often works closely with software developers, network engineers, and product managers to ensure seamless integration of charging stations with backend management platforms. Daily responsibilities include troubleshooting communication issues, testing interoperability, and assisting with firmware updates. Effective collaboration is key, as OCPP specialists must translate technical requirements and resolve complex protocol-related challenges to enable reliable and scalable EV charging infrastructure. This role provides opportunities for career advancement into system architecture or project management as experience grows.

What is OCPP and what does an OCPP specialist do?

OCPP stands for Open Charge Point Protocol, an open communication standard used for exchanging information between electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and central management systems. An OCPP specialist is responsible for implementing, configuring, and maintaining OCPP-compliant software or hardware. They ensure seamless communication, troubleshoot protocol issues, and may support integration with payment or energy management systems. Their expertise helps charging networks remain interoperable and scalable as EV adoption grows.

What is the difference between Ocpp vs EV Charging Station Technician?

AspectOcppEV Charging Station Technician
CertificationsNone required, but knowledge of networking and protocols helpsTechnical certifications in electrical systems or EV charging preferred
Work EnvironmentSoftware development, network management, and protocol configurationHands-on installation, maintenance, and repair of charging stations
Industry UsageUsed in communication between charging stations and management systemsInvolved in deploying and servicing charging stations in the field

Ocpp focuses on the software protocol enabling communication between EV charging stations and management systems, while EV Charging Station Technicians handle the physical installation and maintenance of the hardware. Both roles are essential in the EV charging industry but differ in skills and daily tasks.

Because energy touches everything, we partner closely across the business—especially Real Estate, Facilities, Supply Chain, Network Design, Transportation, and Customer Experience—and with external stakeholders.
Role Summary:
The Senior Manager, Innovations (EV Charging & Energy Solutions) will help design and deliver a superior, scalable EV charging experience for customers—bringing together product strategy, charging operations, payments, and on-site energy infrastructure. This role operates with high ownership and visibility, like a startup within Walmart, and is an individual contributor reporting to the Director, Innovations (Bentonville, AR).What you'll do...
  • Lead innovation design and solution development by partnering with Product, UX, Engineering, and Business teams to identify opportunities, evaluate current capabilities, recommend solutions, and drive implementation; analyze results and present recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Develop and validate proof-of-concept tests by defining test architecture and requirements, supporting associate training where needed, analyzing outcomes, and assessing scalability for broader deployment.
  • Lead medium- to large-scale initiatives and workstreams by gathering requirements, aligning deliverables, tracking KPIs, managing risks/dependencies, and consolidating updates for leadership.
  • Consult and influence across internal organizations to build high-level plans, prioritize workstreams, integrate timelines and tasks, and ensure proper planning, testing, and delivery of strategic initiatives.
  • Drive EV charging operations initiatives, including protocols and integrations such as OCPP, OCPI, and ISO-15118.
  • Own end-to-end payments integrations for field hardware, including vendor selection, PCI terminal onboarding, POS/gateway integration, site readiness, testing, and rollout.
  • Deliver on-site battery storage projects, including vendor selection, design/permitting, site integration and safety validation, commissioning, and operational handoff.
  • Operate effectively in a fast-changing environment, using data-driven decision-making, integrity, and continuous improvement.

What You’ll Bring...
  • 5+ years of experience in EV charging product management and/or EV charging operations.
  • Proficiency with EV charging operations and standards (OCPP/OCPI/ISO-15118) and/or strong energy domain knowledge.
  • Demonstrated success delivering PCI-compliant payments integrations for field hardware (terminal onboarding, gateway/POS integration, testing, rollout).
  • Hands-on experience delivering battery storage projects from design/permitting through commissioning and operational handoff.
  • Strong understanding across software engineering disciplines (e.g., RESTful services, APIs, data modeling, distributed systems/design orchestration).
  • Customer-first mindset with a passion for building usable, reliable, and scalable charging experiences.
  • Strong track record of succeeding in matrixed organizations, influencing stakeholders across multiple domains.
  • Excellent project management, analytics, and executive communication skills.
