What is the difference between Ocpp vs EV Charging Station Technician?

AspectOcppEV Charging Station Technician
CertificationsNone required, but knowledge of networking and protocols helpsTechnical certifications in electrical systems or EV charging preferred
Work EnvironmentSoftware development, network management, and protocol configurationHands-on installation, maintenance, and repair of charging stations
Industry UsageUsed in communication between charging stations and management systemsInvolved in deploying and servicing charging stations in the field

Ocpp focuses on the software protocol enabling communication between EV charging stations and management systems, while EV Charging Station Technicians handle the physical installation and maintenance of the hardware. Both roles are essential in the EV charging industry but differ in skills and daily tasks.

How does an OCPP specialist typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in the deployment of EV charging solutions?

An OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) specialist often works closely with software developers, network engineers, and product managers to ensure seamless integration of charging stations with backend management platforms. Daily responsibilities include troubleshooting communication issues, testing interoperability, and assisting with firmware updates. Effective collaboration is key, as OCPP specialists must translate technical requirements and resolve complex protocol-related challenges to enable reliable and scalable EV charging infrastructure. This role provides opportunities for career advancement into system architecture or project management as experience grows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OCPP specialist?

To thrive as an OCPP Specialist, you need strong knowledge of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, networking protocols, and a background in software engineering or IT. Familiarity with OCPP standards, REST APIs, network security, and tools like Postman or Wireshark is typically required, along with relevant certifications in networking or EV charging technologies. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot issues and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure reliable integration and operation of EV charging systems, supporting the growth of sustainable transportation networks.

What is OCPP and what does an OCPP specialist do?

OCPP stands for Open Charge Point Protocol, an open communication standard used for exchanging information between electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and central management systems. An OCPP specialist is responsible for implementing, configuring, and maintaining OCPP-compliant software or hardware. They ensure seamless communication, troubleshoot protocol issues, and may support integration with payment or energy management systems. Their expertise helps charging networks remain interoperable and scalable as EV adoption grows.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain the Python test-automation platform that gates every firmware release
  • Grow automated regression coverage for EV charging flows and build HIL/SIL simulation
  • Build and own CI/CD pipelines that make automated regression a reliable merge and release gate, with reporting and telemetry that surface pass/fail and root cause
  • Triage and reproduce failures across the full stack (test framework, adapters, sequencing, and charger firmware) and drive defects to closure
  • Partner with firmware and systems engineers to improve testability and support OCPP certification
  • Participate in design and code reviews and release-readiness activities, and maintain technical documentation for the platform and interfaces
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance as needed
Must Have Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in software test automation / SDET or software engineering roles
  • Strong Python (frameworks, services, async automation)
  • Experience building test-automation frameworks and writing maintainable test code
  • Solid experience testing REST and WebSocket APIs and asynchronous, service-oriented systems
  • Experience with distributed systems, Docker, CI/CD, SQL / relational databases, and Linux
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and log-analysis skills across distributed components, with methodical defect isolation
  • Effective communication and ability to work across teams
