Ocean Modeling information

What is an ocean modeling job?

An Ocean Modeling job involves using computer simulations and mathematical models to study ocean dynamics, including currents, temperature, salinity, and climate interactions. Professionals in this field analyze data, develop predictive models, and support research related to marine ecosystems, weather forecasting, and environmental changes. They typically work in academic institutions, government agencies, or private industries like offshore energy and maritime navigation. Strong skills in programming, data analysis, and fluid dynamics are essential for this role.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an ocean modeling professional?

As an ocean modeling professional, your day-to-day work often involves developing and running computer simulations to predict ocean behavior, analyzing large sets of environmental data, and interpreting model outputs to inform research or policy decisions. You'll collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and sometimes government agencies or environmental organizations to ensure your models are scientifically robust and meet project objectives. Regular tasks may include coding or refining model algorithms, troubleshooting computational errors, and preparing written or visual reports to share findings with stakeholders. The role is highly collaborative and often requires balancing several projects, making communication and organizational skills especially valuable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the ocean modeling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in ocean modeling, you need a solid background in oceanography, mathematics, and programming, typically supported by a degree in marine science, physics, or a related field. Familiarity with computational modeling software (such as MATLAB, Python, or FORTRAN), and experience with climate or ocean modeling frameworks are essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings to both technical and non-technical audiences help individuals excel in this field. These skills are crucial for designing accurate models, interpreting large datasets, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to address real-world marine challenges.

  • Clean, validate, and structure data from multiple client systems
  • Identify cost drivers, service issues, trends, and improvement opportunities
  • Perform lane, mode, carrier, and freight spend analyses
  • Develop dashboards, models, and visualizations to support decision-making
  • Translate analytical findings into practical recommendations
  • Assess transportation networks, processes, and performance
  • Support transportation optimization and carrier strategy initiatives
  • Support TMS selection, implementation, testing, and process improvement
  • Develop transportation KPIs and performance reporting
  • Support analysis of international transportation, including ocean and air freight
  • Work with clients and project teams to understand transportation challenges and data requirements
  • Participate in client meetings and workshops
  • Prepare analyses, presentations, and project deliverables
  • Collaborate with Miebach teams across transportation, strategy, engineering, and digital projects
Qualifications

  • Solid understanding of transportation operations, freight costs, carriers, modes, and service levels
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with SQL, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools is preferred
  • Experience with TMS and transportation visibility tools is preferred
  • International freight or import/export experience is a plus
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, Logistics, Business Analytics, or a related field
