Job description

Every day, we get opportunities to make a positive impact - on our colleagues, partners, customers and society. Together, we're pioneering the solutions of the future and unlocking the full potential of precious resources. Trusted to act on initiative, we challenge conventional thinking to develop world-leading technologies that inspire progress in vital areas, including energy, food, water and shipping.

As we push forward, the innovative, open spirit that fuels our 140-year-old start-up culture and rapid growth also drives our personal growth. So, as we shape a more resourceful, less wasteful world, we build our careers too.

About the job

As an integral member of our team, you will play a pivotal role in supporting daily international trade operations by processing customs documentation and maintaining accurate transactional records. You will have the opportunity to work closely with external customs brokers and internal teams to verify data accuracy, flag potential compliance issues for review, and resolve routine errors and bottlenecks. Currently this hybrid position located in Greenwood, IN or Houston, TX.

As a part of the team, you will:

  • Receive and review necessary import and export documentation, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, Entry Summaries (Form 7501), and certificates of origin to ensure completeness.
  • File and index import/export documents in designated digital or physical locations according to U.S. customs regulations and company recordkeeping policies.
  • Retrieve import and export documentation from third-party billing platforms, freight forwarders, and customs brokers to support internal verification processes.
  • Act as a point of contact with outside customs brokers to track shipments and ensure timely clearance at the border.
  • Monitor and report on the status of shipments delayed or stuck in US Customs; follow up on required post-entry corrections as directed.
  • Perform routine restricted party screenings of new customers and end-users using e2open and other automated trade systems, escalating potential matches to the compliance team for resolution.
  • Assist with the daily maintenance of the corporate Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) databases.
  • Process routine classification requests and assist internal stakeholders with assigning standard HTS codes and Schedule B numbers based on established guidelines.
  • Assist trade compliance associates with day-to-day administrative tasks, including processing data for the Duty Drawback and Reconciliation programs.
  • Monitor day-to-day transaction data to identify potential compliance vulnerabilities or data errors and work with senior team members to investigate and resolve risks.

What you know:

You have a high school diploma or GED (bachelor's degree in supply chain, logistics, or business administration preferred) with relevant experience, and:

  • Experience handling import/export operations, logistics coordinating, or working within a customs brokerage preferred.
  • Basic understanding of US import and export operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) concepts and Entry Summary (7501) layouts preferred.
  • Basic understanding of export screening steps and working knowledge of ECCN frameworks preferred.
  • Microsoft Excel proficiency
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.

At Alfa Laval, we pride ourselves on creating an inclusive and dynamic workplace that values diverse perspectives and experiences. While we typically welcome applicants from all locations, currently, we are prioritizing candidates who reside in the US or have an established presence in the area.

What's in it for you?

We offer a challenging position in an open and friendly environment where we help each other to develop and create value. Your work will have a true impact on Alfa Laval's future success. Our benefits-eligible associates enjoy healthcare, dental and vision plans, a robust wellness program, generous 401(k), paid holidays, paid time off benefits, and more. At Alfa Laval, we carefully consider a wide range of factors to determine your total compensation package. We rely on market indicators and consider your specific job, background, skills, and experience to get it right. The hourly wage for this role is typically $23.00 - $26.00/hour.
