How much do ocean modeling jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for ocean modeling in the United States is $40.33, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.25 and $43.51 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an Ocean Modeling job?

An Ocean Modeling job involves using computer simulations and mathematical models to study ocean dynamics, including currents, temperature, salinity, and climate interactions. Professionals in this field analyze data, develop predictive models, and support research related to marine ecosystems, weather forecasting, and environmental changes. They typically work in academic institutions, government agencies, or private industries like offshore energy and maritime navigation. Strong skills in programming, data analysis, and fluid dynamics are essential for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ocean Modeling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in ocean modeling, you need a solid background in oceanography, mathematics, and programming, typically supported by a degree in marine science, physics, or a related field. Familiarity with computational modeling software (such as MATLAB, Python, or FORTRAN), and experience with climate or ocean modeling frameworks are essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex findings to both technical and non-technical audiences help individuals excel in this field. These skills are crucial for designing accurate models, interpreting large datasets, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to address real-world marine challenges.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an ocean modeling professional?

As an ocean modeling professional, your day-to-day work often involves developing and running computer simulations to predict ocean behavior, analyzing large sets of environmental data, and interpreting model outputs to inform research or policy decisions. You'll collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and sometimes government agencies or environmental organizations to ensure your models are scientifically robust and meet project objectives. Regular tasks may include coding or refining model algorithms, troubleshooting computational errors, and preparing written or visual reports to share findings with stakeholders. The role is highly collaborative and often requires balancing several projects, making communication and organizational skills especially valuable.

This role supports cutting-edge research focused on improving ocean model capabilities and assimilating new, high-resolution observational data to support the Navy's Earth System Prediction Capability (ESPC) and global forecasting systems.
As new instruments deliver unprecedented ocean observations, we need experts to help process, integrate, and innovate-pushing the boundaries of coupled ocean-atmosphere models and real-time ocean prediction.
What You'll Do:
You'll contribute to one or more advanced research projects, collaborating with a team of scientists and developers. Responsibilities may include:
  • Writing and optimizing Fortran code for Navy Data Assimilation systems
  • Developing code for ensemble-based data assimilation frameworks
  • Designing schema for processing remotely sensed ocean observations
  • Creating and testing algorithms for operational and research-grade ocean models
  • Conducting evaluation and validation of model enhancements
  • Publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at scientific conferences

Qualifications
What You'll Need:
  • MS in Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics, or related field (PhD preferred)
  • Proficiency in Fortran, Python, and MATLAB
  • Experience with Linux, shell scripting, VSCode, and High-Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Strong understanding of Numerical Methods, Ocean Modeling, and Data Assimilation
  • Familiarity with U.S. Navy ocean modeling systems
  • Must be eligible to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance
  • Prior experience in a Department of Defense research environment is strongly preferred
