Position Summary
The Director of Strategy reports to the VP, Strategy and is responsible for leading the development, execution, and alignment of strategic initiatives for OrangeCoast Medical Center and Saddleback Medical Center. This role provides strategic direction, oversees business planning, and drives provider development for both the Medical Foundation and IPA divisions. The Director manages a team, including the Manager of Strategy, and collaborates with executive leadership to ensure system-wide priorities are achieved.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
  • Strategic Leadership & System Alignment
    • Set strategic direction for OrangeCoast Medical Center, Saddleback Medical Center and IPA, translating system-wide goals into actionable plans for clinics, service lines, and provider growth.
    • Cascade strategic mandates from the VP and executive leadership, ensuring alignment and accountability across entities.
    • Oversee the tracking and reporting of key performance indicators (KPIs) for system and foundation priorities.
    • Facilitate cross-entity collaboration, resolving conflicts and ensuring consistency in strategy execution.
  • Business Planning & Growth
    • Oversee business planning, market analysis, and financial modeling for new clinic sites, expansions, relocations, provider additions, and practice acquisitions.
    • Approve project rationales and business cases, ensuring alignment with strategic and growth priorities.
    • Evaluate current clinic sites and identify opportunities for operational and financial improvement.
  • Provider Development Planning
    • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of provider development plans for bothOrangeCoast Medical Center and Saddleback and IPA divisions.
    • Collaborate with physician leadership, recruitment, and operations to assess provider needs, forecast growth, and align workforce planning with strategic objectives.
    • Oversee analysis of provider capacity, productivity, and market demand to inform recruitment, retention, and integration strategies.
    • Ensure progress on provider development initiatives and report outcomes to executive leadership.
  • Project Oversight & Execution
    • Direct and support the Manager of Strategy and other team members in managing multiple concurrent projects.
    • Ensure timely execution and alignment with quarterly and board approval deadlines.
    • Review and approve executive presentations, project timelines, capital requests, and closure documentation.
  • Data Analysis & Market Assessment
    • Oversee market assessments using demographic, operational, and competitive data (SG2, Tableau, HCAI, etc.).
    • Approve ROI analyses and validate assumptions with operational leaders and Decision Support.
    • Lead lookbacks and dashboard reviews to measure project impact and inform future strategy.
  • Cross-Functional & Executive Collaboration
    • Engage with Decision Support, Operations, Finance, Real Estate, physician leadership, and senior leadership to ensure buy-in and alignment on strategic initiatives.
    • Collaborate with hospital business development leadership to coordinate system-wide growth plans.
    • Represent MCMF in executive forums and strategic planning sessions.
  • Transaction Support & Integration
    • Oversee preparation for acquisitions and new sites, including financial analysis, modeling, and valuation.
    • Support the VP of Business Development in transaction preparation, due diligence, and post-deal integration, but do not lead negotiations or deal execution.
  • Operational Excellence & Community Needs
    • Ensure business plans and initiatives meet community needs and support high-quality, efficient care delivery.
    • Champion performance improvement and patient safety activities.
  • Reporting & Decision Support
    • Oversee the preparation of executive-level presentations and reports for project approvals and strategic reviews.
    • Ensure accountability and transparency in project timelines, deliverables, and outcomes.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
  • Minimum 5+ years in strategy, business development, or project management within a healthcare system or physician group, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven strategic leadership, analytical, financial modeling, and data visualization skills.
  • Experience managing teams and collaborating across functions.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Deep knowledge of healthcare market dynamics, clinic operations, provider workforce planning, and practice acquisition processes.

Education/Licensure/Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree (MBA, MHA, or related) strongly preferred.
