What is an OB scrub tech?

OB Scrub Techs, also known as Obstetric Scrub Technicians, are specialized surgical technologists who assist during obstetric procedures, particularly childbirth-related surgeries like cesarean sections. They are responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field, passing instruments to surgeons, and ensuring all surgical tools are accounted for before, during, and after the procedure. OB Scrub Techs work closely with nurses, obstetricians, and other medical staff to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and baby during delivery. Training typically includes completion of a surgical technology program and on-the-job experience in labor and delivery settings.

What are the duties of an OB scrub tech?

The duties of an OB scrub tech include clerical and administrative duties as well as nursing and medical care responsibilities. Your administrative duties in this career include acting as the receptionist for the OB department, greeting each patient, and helping them to fill out any necessary paperwork. You also answer the phone and schedule appointments. Your medical responsibilities are to assist other licensed professionals to evaluate patients, plan and implement medical procedures, prepare surgical areas, and ensure that equipment is ready for procedures. You also collect patient records.

What are some typical responsibilities of an OB scrub tech during a cesarean section procedure?

During a cesarean section, an OB Scrub Tech plays a critical role in maintaining a sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team. They are responsible for counting sponges and instruments before and after the procedure, ensuring all items are accounted for. Additionally, OB Scrub Techs help with preparing the operating room, setting up supplies, and assisting with patient positioning, making them a vital part of the surgical team in obstetric settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OB scrub tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OB Scrub Tech, you need knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and patient safety practices, often supported by a surgical technologist certification or relevant training. Familiarity with surgical instruments, operating room equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills help OB Scrub Techs support surgeons and nurses effectively during obstetric procedures. These skills are vital for maintaining a sterile environment, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating smooth surgical operations in labor and delivery settings.
