What is an OCS engineer?

An OCS (Overhead Catenary System) Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining the overhead electrical systems that supply power to electric trains and trams. Their work includes planning the layout of catenary wires, ensuring safety standards, and troubleshooting any technical issues related to the system. OCS Engineers play a crucial role in railway electrification projects and work closely with civil, electrical, and signaling teams to ensure efficient and reliable train operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OCS engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OCS Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, with expertise in Overhead Contact Systems (OCS) design, installation, and maintenance, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, railway standards, and project management tools is typically required, along with certifications such as IRSE or equivalent. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, reliable railway operations, adherence to regulations, and successful project delivery within complex infrastructure environments.
