Librarian
Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Academy Charter School (BELA), an all-girls high school located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, is grounded in the core values of Sisterhood, Scholarship, Strength, and Service. BELA is deeply committed to ensuring that 100% of our students graduate prepared for post secondary and beyond. Founded on the belief that academic preparation and life preparation are equally important, each BELA young woman embarks on her own personal and intellectual journey.
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, BELA is committed to implementing the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) with fidelity. Staff members are expected to engage deeply with IB philosophy, instructional practices, curriculum development, and assessment frameworks. BELA invests in ongoing professional development and training to ensure all educators are equipped to deliver rigorous, inquiry-based instruction aligned to IB standards and practices.
The Role
This role is ideal for educators who are deeply committed to the empowerment of young women. Successful candidates are collaborative, reflective, flexible, and eager to engage in the ongoing work of building a rigorous and joyful learning environment rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework.
Furthermore, as an IB World School, BELA seeks educators who are excited to engage in inquiry-based instruction, interdisciplinary learning, and ongoing professional growth through IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) training and implementation. Teachers are expected to actively participate in curriculum development, collaborative planning, assessment creation, and professional learning experiences that support high-quality IB instruction.
This is a full-time position with an anticipated start date of mid-August 2026.
Teachers and staff members at BELA will:
  • Create inspiring, challenging, and effective teaching and learning experiences for all students
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, students, and school leadership
  • Share in the leadership of the school by taking on essential responsibilities that supports the school's learning environment culture
    • Support operational responsibilities such as arrival, dismissal, lunch, and hallway supervision.
    • Lead or support school wide initiatives or committees
    • Support student recruitment events, open houses, Buddy Days, and family engagement events
    • Support Regents, IB, or state testing coordination and proctoring responsibilities
    • Participate in school-wide coverage responsibilities
  • Be committed to serving all students, including Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners, within inclusive classroom settings using a variety of inclusion models
  • Become part of a strong and supportive professional learning community
  • Enjoy and thrive in the lively and diverse world of urban adolescent young women while striving to create a model of public education that serves them well
  • Design, facilitate, and participate in experiences and conversations related to race, gender, class, and identity in ways that empower students and foster community
  • Participate in the school's annual overnight camping trip and service days at the start of the school year
  • Participate in annual curriculum nights, student-led conferences, and staff meetings
  • Engage in ongoing IB professional development, including required MYP and/or DP trainings, collaborative curriculum planning, interdisciplinary unit development, and IB assessment calibration sessions
  • Implement instructional practices aligned to the IB Learner Profile, Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, inquiry-based instruction, and culturally responsive pedagogy

Primary Responsibilities
  • Teach four academic classes
  • Facilitate an enrichment class (club) and weekly office hours/study hall sessions
  • Create and teach challenging and engaging lessons linked to Common Core State Standards and International Baccalaureate standards
  • Use a variety of assessment techniques weekly, monthly, and each trimester to measure growth toward achievement goals
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction until all students meet mastery
  • Serve as a mentor teacher to a group of 12-15 young women and teach one section of Leadership Academy
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to plan curriculum and build school culture across the school
  • Attend school and community events
  • Participate in IB curriculum planning, reflection cycles, and accreditation-related processes as needed

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a relevant academic field required
  • M.A., Ed.M., or Master's degree in a relevant content area preferred
  • NYS Dual Certification in Special Education and General Education preferred/required based on role
  • Minimum of two years of urban teaching experience preferred
  • Strong belief in the mission and core values of BELA
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and/or a demonstrated ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace preferred
  • Experience with IB MYP and/or DP curriculum, training, or implementation preferred; willingness to complete IB training required
