Job description

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Bike Library Director and Environmental Educator 1, Recreation and Education Steward will:
โ€ข Help with daily operation of the Bike Library at Shirley Chisholm State Park. This includes:
a. assessing users' ability to ride, fitting bikes and helmets, and providing info on bike safety
b. Registering riders and checking bikes in and out
c. Flagging bikes that need repair and assisting with basic fleet maintenance
d. Supporting special events such as bike tours, kids' bike swap events and Glide & Ride classes.
โ€ข Help prepare and teach public and private environmental education programs at Shirley Chisholm State Park. This includes:
a. Assist in facilitating summer programs, such as kayaking, Guided hikes, cleanups, and learn-to-fish.
b. Help lead school field trips that focus on hands on science and nature-based learning.
c. Keep materials organized and help maintain inventory.
d. Assist with creating social media posts.
e. Supporting special events such as Wildflower Festival and Treats on the Trails.
f. Collect community science and wildlife monitoring data.
g. Perform in field work to support stewardship and park operations as needed; provide excellent customer service to patrons by answering questions and disseminating information.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
โ€ข Special interest or professional experience in environmental education, natural science, urban ecology or similar field.
โ€ข Strong customer service skills, able to ride a bike, or willingness to learn.
โ€ข High school diploma required.
โ€ข Experience working with children 0-15 or in an education setting.
โ€ข Knowledge of basic bike repair or willingness to learn.
โ€ข Experience kayaking, fishing, or with other forms of outdoor recreation.
โ€ข Bilingual, Spanish language proficiency.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
โ€ข Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
โ€ข Applicants must be willing to work outdoors and in all weather conditions
โ€ข Applicants must be available to work a varied schedule, including weekends, holidays, and nights. The schedule will usually be Wednesday - Sunday, 9:00am - 5:30pm but may be shifted for special events.
โ€ข Applicants must be willing to handle and care for live animals including fish and invertebrates.
โ€ข Applicants must have excellent communication skills and be willing and able to speak publicly to diverse audiences.
โ€ข Applicants must enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
