Description
We are currently seeking:
A Nutritionist to join our team. In this role, you will perform a variety of nutritional assessments and provides nutrition counseling based upon information gathered by interviewing participants, obtaining and assessing blood samples, obtaining and assessing height and weight measurements, evaluate nutritional risk and helping facilitate the participant's choices regarding parenting and nutrition habits. Teaches as well as monitors the teaching of nutrition education group classes. Encourages breastfeeding by promoting a supportive environment, presenting lessons, interacting with individuals, answering questions and determining participant's understanding when necessary. Responsible for performing designated services within a clinical setting by State and Local WIC policies; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Adheres to the Texas WIC Health and Human Services Commission regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Conducts interviews for potentially eligible participants, evaluates, certifies and determines applicant eligibility for WIC program services and prescribes food packages following the appropriate policies.
  • Refers participants to appropriate programs and other community resources as needed.
  • Teaches Nutrition Education group classes and conducts individual counseling following the approved NE plan.
  • Evaluates and approves/disapproves non-contract formula and/or medical requests; communicates with the Registered Dietitian and the WIC State agency to get approval for formulas not authorized to approve.
  • Corresponds with health care providers to verify information on the medical request form for RX food packages.
  • Responsible for special order drop shipment food packages, issuance and distribution.
  • Performs other duties as needed to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Obtains medical histories, anthropometric measurements and performs an iron blood screening to assess the hematocrit/hemoglobin value according to guidelines.
  • Performs physical and nutritional assessments of participants.
  • Assesses food intake and identifies potential dietary deficiencies.
  • Conducts medium and low risk analyses of participants and refers high-risk participants with special dietary needs to the WIC Registered Dietitian.
  • Provides nutrition counseling and education to participants, using the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) method, supporting the values and goals of the WIC program.
  • Refers participants to the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor or IBCLC for follow-up or additional counseling as needed.
  • Communicates all evidence or suspicion of fraud or child abuse to the appropriate authorities.
  • Attends regular WIC trainings to comply with HHSC rules and regulations and WIC program procedures, practices, projects and job skills.
  • Plans, coordinates and delivers staff nutrition training.
  • Prepares, updates, enters and maintains participant records and information through the paperless Texas Integrated Network (TXIN) computer software program.
  • Document participant record using the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) method.
  • Supports the mission of the WIC program of actively improving and promoting good nutrition, physical activity and breastfeeding as the cultural norm.
  • Communicates with outside agencies, health care providers and community organizations regarding delivery of WIC program services.
  • Provides WIC outreach information to the public and community partners to promote the WIC program.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining class schedules.
  • Participates in developing annual training plans in accordance with State WIC guidelines.
  • Must not have a Conflict of Interest with WIC.
  • Must be able to work Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm; and the first Saturday of the month from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Requirements
  • Providing for the delivery of nutrition services to WIC program participants.
  • Interviewing and counseling.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other staff members, outside agencies, community organizations, health care professionals, participants and the general public.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand the importance of medical confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively present educational programs.
  • Ability to teach groups.
  • Ability to prioritize time and responsibilities.
  • Ability to take direction from authority.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Education and Experience:
  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition Sciences; Human Nutrition or Dietetics; Community Nutrition; Public Health Nutrition; Clinical Nutrition; or Home Economics with 24 semester hours in food and nutrition with a minimum of one year nutrition, counseling and WIC program experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have experience in working directly with people and in communicating in a culturally competent manner.
  • Must have some experience that demonstrates good verbal and written communication.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record.
  • Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
  • Have a genuine desire to perform in a clinical and office setting/environment.
  • Subject to sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time; bending, reaching and lifting objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Increased risk for exposure to hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, blood borne pathogens and possibility of coming in contact with potentially irate members of the public.
  • Some travel involved. Must be able to work at the satellite clinics as needed.
