What is a nurse attorney?

A Nurse Attorney is a professional with dual credentials as a registered nurse (RN) and a licensed attorney. They use their medical and legal expertise to work in healthcare law, malpractice cases, patient advocacy, licensing boards, or hospital administration. Nurse Attorneys may represent healthcare providers, patients, or organizations in legal matters related to medical practice and policy. Their unique background allows them to bridge the gap between the legal and healthcare systems, ensuring compliance, ethical standards, and patient rights.

What are the typical career advancement opportunities for a nurse attorney?

As a Nurse Attorney, career advancement often includes moving into senior legal counsel positions within healthcare organizations, specializing in healthcare compliance, or becoming a partner at law firms focusing on medical cases. Many Nurse Attorneys also transition into executive roles, such as Chief Risk Officer or Director of Legal Affairs, or choose to teach healthcare law at academic institutions. Advancement often depends on gaining specialized experience, building a reputation within the healthcare legal community, and pursuing ongoing education in either law or healthcare. Networking and professional development through organizations like the American Association of Nurse Attorneys can help accelerate your career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the nurse attorney position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nurse Attorney, you need dual licensure as a registered nurse (RN) and an attorney (JD), along with strong knowledge of both healthcare and legal systems. Familiarity with legal research databases, electronic medical records, and courtroom presentation software is often required. Exceptional communication, analytical thinking, and negotiation skills help Nurse Attorneys excel when bridging medical and legal concepts. These competencies enable effective advocacy and risk management for healthcare organizations, patients, or clients facing legal-medical issues.

Ideal candidates are those who work hard while enjoying what they do, consistently deliver passionate client service, and produce work of the highest quality. Our firm has a strong track record of attracting and retaining culturally compatible team members, supporting their professional growth, and fostering a workplace committed to legal innovation and continuous improvement. We encourage entrepreneurship and are dedicated to enhancing professional development and long-term collaboration.

Trial Lawyer Attorney

We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated partner-level attorney with jury and non-jury trial experience in both state and federal courts. The ideal candidate will have experience in real estate litigation, business torts, officer and director liability matters, complex commercial litigation, bankruptcy litigation, and insurance litigation. Candidates must have a portable book of business demonstrating both their current client base and potential for new business generation, with preference given to candidates based in Miami or interested in joining our Miami office.

Real Estate Attorney

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced senior attorney with experience leading real estate transactions, including purchase and sale, leasing, and loan matters. The ideal candidates will have experience handling complex deals and serving as first chair on major transactions. Candidates should have a strong academic background, exceptional drafting and negotiation skills, and the ability to assume significant project responsibility in a fast-paced environment. The candidates must be diligent, detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to collaboration.

Healthcare Attorney

We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated partner-level attorney with experience in healthcare and life sciences. Experience working with Medicare, CMS, government enforcement agencies, or with payers or managed care organizations is a plus. Core requirements include strong healthcare regulatory and transactional experience; compliance with federal and state health laws and regulations; private and public third-party reimbursement; corporate practice of medicine; operational issues; integrated delivery systems; and the purchase, sale, and merger of healthcare businesses and joint ventures. Relevant past work should involve a broad range of healthcare entities such as physician group practices, large group providers, healthcare systems, skilled nursing and long-term care facilities, clinical laboratories, home health agencies, medical device manufacturers, durable medical equipment suppliers, practice management companies, management service organizations (MSOs), and substance abuse treatment centers. Preference will be given to candidates with a book of business.

Bankruptcy Attorney

We are looking to expand our Business Reorganization Team with an experienced first-chair level partner who brings portable business. Our ideal candidate has substantial experience in Chapter 11 cases, representing debtors, committees, and fiduciaries, with a preference for those who also have bankruptcy-related litigation experience. We seek a colleague who is collaborative and a team player and who maintains a positive attitude. Membership in The Florida Bar or a commitment to admission is mandatory.

Labor and Employment Law Attorney

We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated partner-level attorney with experience handling complex labor and employment matters. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in both the advisory and litigation aspects of labor and employment law, with a focus on providing strategic counsel across various industries. Preference will be given to candidates with a book of business.

Securities Attorney

We are seeking to expand our Corporate, Securities, and M&A Practice Group with the addition of a highly qualified and motivated attorney with at least eight years of experience in private securities offerings, fund work, and joint ventures, including in connection with so-called “506(b)” offerings. We seek a candidate with strong academic credentials and prior work experience who has served as lead counsel on private placement offerings, private funds, and sophisticated joint ventures. Applicants must demonstrate sound judgment, as well as strong organizational and time management skills.

Environmental Law Attorney

We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated partner-level attorney with at least six years of experience in environmental transactional work, regulatory compliance, and permitting matters. The ideal candidate will have experience with transactional support and due diligence, environmental assessments and liability issues, wetlands and coastal permitting, complex land use projects, air quality matters, hazardous materials contamination, and compliance and enforcement cases.

Land Use Attorney

We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated attorney for Miami, Broward, and/or Palm Beach Counties with at least five years of experience in land use, zoning, and development permitting.

Trusts and Estates / Wealth Planning Attorney

We are seeking a highly qualified and motivated partner-level attorney with at least six years of experience in complex domestic and international estate planning, as well as related income, partnership, and tax planning. The ideal candidate will also have experience in corporate and personal planning for high-net-worth individuals and multinational families. A Tax or Estate Planning LL.M. is preferred.
