What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Numerical Analysis position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Numerical Analysis, you need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and computational methods, typically supported by a degree in applied mathematics, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as MATLAB, Python, or R) and proficiency in numerical simulation or modeling software are crucial. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication stand out as valuable soft skills in this specialty. These competencies are critical for developing accurate numerical solutions and collaborating effectively within interdisciplinary technical teams.

What kinds of projects do professionals in Numerical Analysis typically work on?

Professionals in Numerical Analysis often work on projects involving the development and implementation of algorithms to solve complex mathematical problems, such as simulations, optimizations, and predictive modeling. Their work is typically applied to fields like engineering design, finance, data science, and scientific computing, where accurate numerical solutions are vital. On a daily basis, they may collaborate with engineers, scientists, and software developers to ensure models reflect real-world scenarios and produce reliable results. This collaborative and interdisciplinary approach offers plenty of opportunities to broaden expertise and progress into more specialized or senior analytical roles.

What is a Numerical Analysis job?

A Numerical Analysis job involves developing and applying mathematical algorithms to solve complex numerical problems. Professionals in this field use computational techniques to approximate solutions for equations that may not have analytical solutions. They work in areas such as engineering, physics, finance, and computer science to optimize simulations, data analysis, and modeling. Strong skills in programming, mathematics, and problem-solving are essential for success in this role.

What job pays $400,000 a year without a degree?

High-level roles such as certain sales executives, real estate developers, or entrepreneurs can earn $400,000 annually without a formal degree, often relying on experience, networking, and specialized skills. These positions typically involve commission-based income, business ownership, or performance incentives, and may require strong negotiation, industry knowledge, and risk management abilities.

Job description

At Cadence, we hire and develop leaders and innovators who want to make an impact on the world of technology.

Department: CFD Research & Development

We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join our R&D team to support large-scale, high-fidelity simulation of multiphase turbulent flows. This position involves developing parallel simulation codes, implementing advanced numerical methods, and validating models for liquid spray and atomization. You will work on challenging problems in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and contribute to innovative solutions in industrial and scientific applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement simulation software for multiphase flows using concepts from Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) and diffuse interface methods.
  • Develop GPU-accelerated numerical algorithms for both incompressible and compressible regimes using an unstructured LES solver.
  • Optimize codes for high-performance computing (HPC) environments leveraging C++, MPI, CUDA, and HIP.
  • Conduct rigorous numerical analysis to ensure accuracy and stability of simulation codes.
  • Validate models against experimental data, particularly for spray dynamics.
  • Contribute to research in physics-based subgrid-scale modeling for interfacial flows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate simulation tools into broader workflows.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field. (Summer 2026)
  • Proven R&D experience in developing CFD simulation codes for multiphase flows.
  • Strong background in multiphase flow, LES, and numerical analysis.
  • Proficiency in C++, MPI, and GPU programming (CUDA/HIP).
  • Experience with high-performance computing and parallelization techniques.
  • Familiarity with compressible flow, combustion modeling, and spray validation.

The annual salary range for California is $114,800 to $213,200. You may also be eligible to receive incentive compensation: bonus, equity, and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the salary range is a guideline and compensation may vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location. Our benefits programs include: paid vacation and paid holidays, 401(k) plan with employer match, employee stock purchase plan, a variety of medical, dental and vision plan options, and more.
