How much do internship numerical analysis jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship numerical analysis in the United States is $17.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What types of projects do interns in numerical analysis typically work on, and how do these contribute to the organization's goals?

Interns in numerical analysis often work on projects such as developing and implementing algorithms for data modeling, optimizing computational methods, or analyzing large datasets to extract insights. These projects directly support the organization's research, engineering, or product development efforts by improving the accuracy and efficiency of numerical computations. Interns frequently collaborate with experienced analysts, data scientists, and engineers, gaining valuable exposure to real-world problem solving and cross-functional teamwork. This hands-on experience not only builds technical skills but also demonstrates the impact of numerical methods in practical applications.

What is the difference between Internship Numerical Analysis vs Data Analyst Internship?

AspectInternship Numerical AnalysisData Analyst Internship
Required CredentialsMathematics, Engineering, or Computer Science backgroundStatistics, Data Science, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, finance, engineering firmsBusiness, tech companies, consulting firms
Employer & Industry UsageFinance, engineering, scientific researchMarketing, finance, healthcare, tech

Internship Numerical Analysis focuses on mathematical modeling, algorithms, and computational methods for solving complex problems, often in scientific or engineering contexts. Data Analyst Internships emphasize data collection, analysis, and visualization to support business decisions. While both roles involve data and technical skills, Numerical Analysis internships are more research and algorithm-driven, whereas Data Analyst internships are more business and insights-oriented.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Numerical Analysis, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Numerical Analysis Internship, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, especially numerical methods, and coursework in applied math or engineering. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience using mathematical software tools are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help interns stand out in collaborative and research-driven environments. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, efficient problem resolution, and meaningful contributions to complex numerical projects.

What is an internship in numerical analysis?

An internship in numerical analysis is a temporary position, typically for students or recent graduates, where you apply mathematical techniques and computational methods to solve real-world problems. Interns may assist with developing algorithms, running simulations, or analyzing large datasets, often using programming languages like Python, MATLAB, or R. These internships are common in industries such as engineering, finance, data science, and research, and provide valuable hands-on experience bridging theoretical math and practical application.

Job description

Hampton Proton is the nation's 8th proton therapy facility and one of the largest free-standing proton clinics in the world. The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating a variety of cancers since August 2010.
Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) began with a vision. After the instillation of the first proton cancer treatment institute in 1990, rumblings of the therapy's success reached Hampton University president, Dr. William R. Harvey. Upon learning more about the treatment from a Hampton University alumnus, he assembled a team to assess the feasibility of what would become the largest free-standing proton therapy facility in the world.
Hampton Proton provides one of the best healthcare opportunities anywhere in our great nation, and you are a vital member of this important team. How well we accomplish our goals of conquering cancer and saving lives largely depends on your daily contributions, as Hampton Proton's true character is reflected through the manner in which all of our patients are treated. Only your best efforts enable us to continue to achieve excellence in everything we do.
To be considered for Hampton Proton's Internship Program, the following information will be required:
โ€ข Proof of being currently enrolled in a program of study or a recent graduate (within 12 months) from an accredited college/university or technical/vocational institution.
โ€ข Proof of good academic standing (unofficial transcripts are acceptable).
โ€ข Proof of academic class schedule.
โ€ข Recent resume and/or cover letter.
โ€ข Applicable course syllabus if academic credit will be applied from your educational institution.
Data Analyst Internship
Project: Comparative analysis of patient cycle time from consultation to treatment start date. The analysis will include:
  • The selection of 30 patients from the first quarter prior year and 30 patients from first quarter current year that are simple prostate cases.
  • Using the patient's chart, list their initial consultation date, simulation date, and first date of treatment.
  • Calculate the number of working days between consultation, simulation, and first date of treatment.
  • Determine and compare the average days of a patients cycle for 1Qtr prior year versus 1Qtr current.
  • Provide a full summary of analytical findings and recommendations to increase patient cycle time.

!!! During your application process, please use the section titled "Additional Documents" to upload your unofficial transcript, the internship course syllabus, and concise student schedule. !!!
At the completion of an Internship Program, each Student Intern will be required to create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation that will be performed in a session with other Student Interns where the mentors/supervisors will attend. Topics of discussion should be focused on the following:
โ€ข What college/university you attend and your major.
โ€ข What plans do you have after graduating.
โ€ข What was learned during the internship.
