Job Summary
Dominion Energy has established an internal Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Lab to employ advanced testing methodologies and expertise to deliver precise, data-driven insights into equipment failures. This initiative aims to improve reliability, customer satisfaction, and safety. As part of Dominion Energy's Electric Transmission Organization, this role involves ensuring safety and compliance in lab activities, performing root cause analyses, maintaining laboratory facilities, and generating comprehensive reports. Lab personnel are also required to collaborate with other departments and stay informed about industry standards.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Collaborate closely with equipment subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop and document the process for equipment tear down and set clear analysis expectations for failed equipment.
  • Partner with SMEs to identify the underlying causes of equipment failure by conducting thorough visual examinations, analyzing data, and utilizing a range of analytical techniques to determine the root cause.
  • Perform Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, including magnetic-particle exams, eddy current testing, and acoustic emission testing, in coordination with equipment SMEs.
  • Work with SMEs to produce detailed reports outlining analysis findings and recommending corrective actions to prevent future failures and enhance equipment reliability.
  • Ensure that safety and compliance requirements are applied to all RCA activities in the laboratory, and verify that personnel performing RCA have completed all required training.
  • Collaborate with other departments such as engineering, maintenance, and quality control to share information, coordinate investigations, and ensure effective problem resolution.
  • Deliver training programs for field organizations on safely engaging with de-energized equipment.
  • Maintain laboratory facilities.
  • Participate in industry forums such as IEEE, SEE, IEC, and engage in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key vendors and educational institutions to foster collaborative efforts.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

This role is based in Dinwiddie or Innsbrook, VA and offers a hybrid schedule depending on business needs. Relocation assistance may be offered to the successful candidate.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
  • 10+ years of directly related equipment experience with Bachelor's degree
  • 12+ years of directly related equipment experience with Associate's degree
  • 14+ years of directly related equipment experience with HS diploma/GED

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience required for entry into this job include the following:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles, theories and practices
  • Extensive mechanical and electrical knowledge, both substation equipment and facilities
  • Shop equipment operation experience (drill press, grinder, bandsaw, etc.)
  • In-depth knowledge of industry codes, government regulations and company policies and practices
  • In-depth knowledge of design and operation of complex systems and equipment
  • Ability to apply expert knowledge, techniques, skills and modern tools of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to solve complex and broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline
  • Ability to design systems, components, or processes meeting specified needs for broadly defined engineering problems appropriate to the discipline
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to serve as project team lead
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (including technical writing)
  • Strong personal computer skills
  • In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g., Excel, etc.)
  • Supplier relations management experience
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
  • Equally effective working independently or in team environment
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Strong planning, organizational and project management skills

Preferred:
  • Experience operating electrical test equipment to include but not limited to Doble, Megger, TTR, DLRO, AC/DC Hi-pot, Winding Resistance, and SFRA
  • Crane and rigging experience
  • Forklift and manlift operation experience

Education Requirements
Preferred level of education: Bachelor
Degree equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree.
In order to be a titled Engineering Technical Specialist, you must meet one of the following criteria:
  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited)
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited)
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred degree
