What does a non invasive cardiology tech do?

A Non Invasive Cardiology Tech, also known as a Non Invasive Cardiology Technician, assists cardiologists by performing diagnostic tests that do not require inserting instruments into the body. These tests commonly include electrocardiograms (EKGs), echocardiograms, stress tests, and Holter monitoring. The tech is responsible for preparing patients, operating specialized equipment, and ensuring accurate test results to help diagnose and monitor heart conditions. Their work is crucial in providing safe, efficient cardiac care without surgical procedures.

What are some typical challenges faced by non invasive cardiology techs in a hospital setting?

Non Invasive Cardiology Techs often encounter challenges such as managing a high volume of patients, adapting to rapidly changing schedules, and ensuring accurate results under time constraints. They must also stay up-to-date with evolving cardiac diagnostic technology and maintain excellent communication with both patients and the cardiology team. Balancing patient comfort with the need for precise data collection can require strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a non invasive cardiology tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Non Invasive Cardiology Tech, you need a solid understanding of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic procedures, typically supported by an associate degree or certification in cardiovascular technology. Proficiency with ECG machines, stress testing equipment, Holter monitors, and familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems are commonly required. Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help ensure accurate results and positive patient experiences. These competencies are crucial for delivering reliable diagnostic data that support effective patient care and treatment planning.

What is the difference between Non Invasive Cardiology Tech vs Echocardiography Technician?

AspectNon Invasive Cardiology TechEchocardiography Technician
CertificationsCPR, Basic Life Support, and sometimes specialized cardiology certificationsRegistered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) credentials often preferred
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, outpatient centers performing diagnostic testsHospitals, cardiology clinics, outpatient imaging centers focusing on echocardiograms
Job FocusPerforming various non-invasive cardiac tests like EKGs, Holter monitors, stress testsSpecializing in performing and analyzing echocardiograms (ultrasound imaging of the heart)

While both roles involve cardiac diagnostics, Non Invasive Cardiology Techs have a broader scope of non-invasive tests, whereas Echocardiography Technicians focus specifically on ultrasound imaging of the heart. Both require similar certifications and work in similar healthcare settings, but their technical focus differs.

  • Eligible Candidates: Graduates from 2026 or 2027; some visa sponsorship available
  • Reason for Opening: Replacement for a retiring physician and expansion of services

We are in search of outstanding clinicians who aspire to have a meaningful career while also enjoying a fulfilling personal life. Join our expanding program and make a significant impact on a grateful community without sacrificing family time. You may find that your demanding professional life and rewarding personal life are more balanced here than in bustling urban environments. You won’t waste time in traffic or on tedious paperwork, as you will be supported by a skilled team of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) within a respected health system, free from the pressure of unrealistic productivity expectations. Our medical staff consists of highly trained physicians from around the globe who have chosen to stay here because living and working in this area is truly exceptional. Their careers are both satisfying and continuously evolving as they deliver top-tier medical care, supported by our esteemed Heart & Vascular Institute, while being part of a welcoming community that appreciates their contributions to patient care.

About the Role

Our Heart & Vascular Institute is looking for a full-time, general non-invasive cardiologist to join our growing team in 2026 or 2027. The selected candidate will receive a clinical academic appointment and will provide both inpatient and outpatient services at our UPMC Jameson and/or UPMC Horizon facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inpatient cardiology consultations
  • Provide critical care services
  • Analyze ECGs and interpret transthoracic echocardiograms
  • Perform and interpret transesophageal echocardiograms and cardiac nuclear studies
  • Opportunity to engage in teaching

These responsibilities will be shared on a weekly rotation with fellow cardiologists, and weekend coverage will be on a 1:4 basis.

About the Practice

The Heart & Vascular Institute at UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon currently includes four full-time cardiologists (two interventionalists and two non-invasive cardiologists, with plans to expand to six). Additionally, there are ten APPs serving two suburban areas near Pittsburgh. Our team is complemented by part-time services from four electrophysiologists (including a pacemaker clinic), a heart failure specialist, three vascular surgeons, one thoracic surgeon, and one cardiothoracic surgeon. The outpatient office in New Castle is located within UPMC Jameson, which also houses a comprehensive range of diagnostic services, including two catheterization labs. HVI Horizon-Greenville is situated within UPMC Horizon Greenville hospital, while HVI Horizon-Shenango is located directly across from UPMC Horizon Shenango Valley hospital.

About Our Community

Choose to reside in or near the Pittsburgh metropolitan area (e.g., Cranberry Township) and commute to work, or opt for one of the picturesque suburban neighborhoods surrounding UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon. The hospitals are set in the scenic rolling hills of Lawrence and Mercer counties, close to lakes and several cities/airports. Our region offers the best of both worlds: charming suburban and small-town living in safe, affordable, family-friendly neighborhoods, while remaining conveniently close to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Erie, and Youngstown via nearby interstates. Our communities feature award-winning schools, affordable housing, and a wealth of recreational and cultural activities, all underpinned by a strong "blue collar" ethos that has evolved from our historical roots as a steel town into a modern family-friendly haven. Housing options range from typical rentals and ownership to unique, affordable neighborhoods, including vibrant college towns, larger suburban areas, and rural settings with ample land. Enjoy a variety of recreational and cultural offerings, including local and state parks, fitness centers, symphonies, hiking and biking trails, sports facilities, golfing, skiing, museums, live music venues, and community and professional theater—plus even skydiving! Known as the "Lakeland Area," our region boasts numerous waterways for fishing, sailing, and swimming, from expansive state parks to serene rivers accessible via kayak or canoe. Shopping options include one of the largest outlet malls in the country, along with various national chain stores and unique local boutiques. There is truly something for everyone in our region!

Collaboration Between UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson

UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson are neighboring community teaching hospitals with a long-standing tradition of serving their communities for over a century. They joined forces in 2016 to enhance regional care for residents in Mercer and Lawrence counties in western Pennsylvania. Both hospitals are integral parts of the extensive, nationally recognized UPMC network, which has had flagship hospitals featured on the U.S. News and World Report's Honor Roll of America's Best Hospitals for over a decade. UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson collectively offer nearly 200 beds across three hospital facilities located in Greenville, the Shenango Valley, and New Castle, along with multiple outpatient and primary care facilities throughout the seven-county region of northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio.

What We Offer
  • Support from a dedicated team of APPs and staff, allowing you to concentrate on patient care rather than administrative tasks
