Job description

Summary
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Medical Occupations to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: The incumbent will serve as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) with responsibility for performing medical examinations and documenting medical history and findings in order for a determination to be made about suitability of applicants for service in the Armed Forces.

  • Perform applicant physical examinations in accordance with agency standards and assist with applicant medical processing at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).
  • Ensure the confidentiality of applicants is respected and that professionalism is maintained at all times in the medical department.
  • Perform applicant medical prescreening as directed by the Chief Medical Officer.
  • Conduct complete face-to-face medical histories on applicants who have completed the prescreen process and have been authorized to process.
  • Complete all computer and non-computer based medical documentation in accordance with the Command's software packages and policies.
  • Perform physical inspections of previously qualified applicants to document their status for meeting standards at the time of actual enlistment on active duty and at any other time as required.
  • Perform a variety of professional direct health care duties within the field of general medicine.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 2 years. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner):
Education:
A graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. (Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.)This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Foreign Degree: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must attach a copy of your Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools certification.)
Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination AND possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (Note: You must attach a copy of your license or registration.)
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirements below. (Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.)

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes: 1) Providing and/or coordinating patient care; 2) Conducting screening examinations; 3) Ordering and/or reviewing diagnostic tests to treat health conditions; AND 4) Maintaining patient medical records. . This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.
