Overview
About the Role
The primary purpose of the Medical Records Technician (Release of Information) position is foster a high level of customer service by assisting patients and their families, caregivers, outside auditors, community physicians, external agencies, and hospital personnel and ensuring they receive appropriate, timely and complete health information in response to written, phone, fax, email and/or in-person requests. Answers inquiries for medical record information in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and according to HIPAA standards.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients, families, caregivers, physicians, auditors, external agencies, and hospital staff.
  • Respond to requests for medical records and health information received by phone, email, fax, written correspondence, or in person.
  • Ensure the accurate, timely, and complete release of health information in accordance with established procedures.
  • Serve as a resource for inquiries related to medical records and protected health information.
  • Verify and process requests while maintaining the confidentiality and security of patient records.
  • Adhere to hospital policies, departmental procedures, and HIPAA regulations governing the release of information.
  • Facilitate effective communication between stakeholders and the Health Information Management department.
  • Support compliance efforts by ensuring all disclosures of health information are properly authorized and documented.

Qualifications
What You'll Bring
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in medical records-related work required.
  • Completion of at least one (1) year and continued enrollment in a Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT) program may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Prior experience with Medical Records Release of Information processes preferred.
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record (EHR) system is a plus.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Ability to perform job functions, follow directions, and make independent decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of computers and internet navigation required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications, particularly:
    • Excel
    • Outlook
    • Shared file management

  • Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, tact, and diplomacy when interacting with internal and external customers.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)
In compliance with New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly range for this position is TC/1875: Probationary Rate $28.32- Job Rate $28.82- Two (2) Year Rate $29.68.
