Job description

Full-Time | 12-Hour Night Shift

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla

Join our highly engaged team of Registered Nurses in the 72 Bed, Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) located within the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute. Our DOU specializes in Cardiac Care (Intervention, Pre/Post Open Heart Surgery and LVADs). 

Our DOU is a fast-paced unit with high turnover in patient population.  The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, engaged, resilient and someone that thrives in a challenging and ever-evolving work environment. 

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing direct patient care within the scope of his/her practice.

Key Responsibilities include:

-            Provide direct care to patients with acute cardiac diagnoses / conditions

-            Perform continuous cardiac monitoring and interpret telemetry, EKGs

-            Administer cardiac medications, titrate drips within systemwide and clinical protocols

-            Support recovery of pre and post pen heart surgery, pre and post interventional and LVAD patients

-            Respond to changes in patient status

-            Educate Patient / families of plan of care

Patient care includes assessment, planning and implementing a plan of care and evaluating patients' progress towards expected outcomes. The RN takes primary responsibility for the patients' care as delivered by the Care Team under his/her supervision. Works collaboratively with other members of the patient care team to ensure optimal patient care.

In order to remain eligible for your retention incentive the following criteria must be met:

  • Must remain in original hired FTE Status and Shift (if specified in offer letter)
  • Must remain in original department/specialty
  • Must remain in original Job Title
  • Transfers to other locations will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may result in forfeiting remaining incentive bonus unless specifically noted in your offer letter.

Required Qualifications: 

  • One (1) year of recent RN experience (6 months in an inpatient setting)
  • Registered nursing degree from an accredited school of nursing
  • California Registered Nurse License
  • Current American Heart Association BLS
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to demonstrate positive behaviors
  • Must be able to speak, read and follow instructions in English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Experience in telemetry, cardiac care or cardiac stepdown preferred
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS.
