Job description

Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for assisting the Patient Care Manager with department operations for the delivery of safe, effective and efficient nursing care in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice as defined by Ridgeview Medical Center, the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice. Participates in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating patient care activities, staff education, and management activities as delegated by the Patient Care Manager. Functions as a supervisor in the clinical setting, as a resource, educational support, communication liaison, and role model of Professional Nursing Practice.

Job Functions

  1. Performs RN functions.
  2. Assists the Patient Care Manager with staff resources including the recruiting, selecting, hiring, and orienting qualified individuals. Collaborates with preceptors to coordinate unit-based orientation and preceptor programs and assists in development of unit preceptors.
  3. Provides ongoing coaching, mentoring and support to staff. Assist with supporting new graduate Registered Nurses in the Nurse Residency program.
  4. Manages and coordinates the daily activities and staff assignments of the unit to ensure efficient and effective operations.
  5. Supports Charge Registered Nurse and staff to provide staff coverage based on unit census, patient acuity, unit activity and unit staffing plan.
  6. Conducts annual performance evaluations and necessary corrective action for assigned staff.
  7. Maintains clinical knowledge of patient population.
  8. Assures optimal clinical outcomes through staff competency, orientation, and education programs.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Work Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or actively completing in 3 years

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and decision making
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a team
  • Ability to respond appropriately to unpredictable situations and diverse patient populations
  • Demonstrated skills in management and supervision

License/Certifications

  • Current professional nurse licensure in Minnesota or if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process
  • BLS Certification and other certification (s) as required by the unit/department

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of acute care RN experience
  • At least 1 year Leadership Experience
