Job description

The Software Engineer II (Workday Extend and Integrations) will lead the design, development, implementation, and support of enterprise-grade Workday solutions. This role requires deep technical expertise with Workday Extend and Workday Integrations, combined with strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.
The ideal candidate will serve as a technical leader, partnering closely with HR and external vendors to deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions that support critical business processes. In addition to hands-on development responsibilities, this individual will help establish engineering standards, mentor team members, develop solution designs, and drive technical excellence across the Workday ecosystem.
This is an on-site position located in Springfield, MO. Remote work is not an option for this position.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Solution Design & Development
  • Design, develop, deploy, and support Workday Extend applications that address complex business requirements.
  • Design and implement Workday integrations using a variety of integration technologies and patterns, including EIB, Orchestrations, Core Connectors, Studio, and REST/SOAP services.
  • Lead technical discovery sessions and translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Design integrations and solutions across multiple Workday functional domains, including HCM, Payroll, Benefits, and Recruiting.
  • Ensure solutions are designed for scalability, maintainability, observability, security, and audit/compliance requirements.
  • Develop and maintain production-grade solutions that support business-critical processes and data flows.

Technical Leadership
  • Serve as a senior technical resource and subject matter expert for Workday Extend and Integrations.
  • Establish and maintain technical standards, development best practices, and reference architectures.
  • Review and approve technical designs, code, and implementation approaches produced by internal engineers and external consultants.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to team members and project stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to Workday development and integration practices.

Technical Analysis & Documentation
  • Lead technical discovery and requirements analysis for Workday enhancements, integrations, and application development initiatives.
  • Author comprehensive technical specifications, solution design documents, interface specifications, and implementation plans for Workday projects and enhancements.
  • Translate business and functional requirements into detailed technical designs that can be executed by internal teams and external partners.
  • Ensure technical documentation is maintained throughout the project lifecycle and accurately reflects deployed solutions.
  • Collaborate with functional teams to evaluate change requests and determine technical feasibility, complexity, risks, and implementation approaches.

Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Partner with HR to define requirements and develop solution strategies.
  • Communicate technical concepts and tradeoffs effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Act as a trusted advisor for Workday platform capabilities, limitations, and best practices.

Operational Support
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues involving Workday applications, integrations and data discrepancies.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive measures.
  • Support integration monitoring, alerting, and operational readiness activities.
  • Own and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, support procedures, and knowledge transfer materials.

Skills:
Required:

  • 4+ years of hands-on Workday Integration development experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on Workday Extend development experience.
  • Proven track record delivering and supporting production-grade Workday applications and integrations supporting business-critical processes.
  • Strong expertise in Workday Extend application development.
  • Extensive experience developing Workday integrations using:
    • Enterprise Interface Builder (EIB)
    • Workday Orchestrations
    • Core Connectors
    • Workday Studio
    • REST and SOAP web services
  • Experience designing and implementing integrations across:
    • Human Capital Management (HCM)
    • Payroll
    • Benefits
    • Recruiting
  • Strong understanding of the Workday Business Process Framework.
  • Experience troubleshooting integration failures, production incidents, and data reconciliation challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to design solutions with a focus on scalability, maintainability, observability, and compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience authoring technical specifications and solution design documentation for Workday projects, enhancements, and integrations.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into detailed technical designs, integration mappings, data flow diagrams, and implementation plans.
  • Experience facilitating technical design reviews and obtaining alignment among business, functional, security, and engineering stakeholders.

Preferred:
  • Workday certifications in Extend and/or Integrations.
  • Professional software engineering background with experience applying modern engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience with Workday reporting, calculated fields, and the Workday security model.
  • Experience working within enterprise architecture, governance, and security frameworks.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices and automated testing approaches for Workday solutions.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field
Experience: Experienced practitioner able to work unsupervised (18 months to 3 years)
Managerial Experience: Basic experience of coordinating the work of others (4 to 6 months)
