To thrive as a New Grad Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and data structures, usually supported by a computer science degree or related field. Familiarity with common coding languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), version control systems like Git, and basic software development tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, teamwork, and effective communication help new engineers excel in dynamic team environments. These skills are crucial to adapting quickly, contributing to projects, and building a successful foundation in the software industry.

As a New Grad Software Engineer, you’ll often start by contributing to team projects through tasks like fixing bugs, writing unit tests, and developing small features under the supervision of senior engineers. You might participate in code reviews, collaborate on documentation, and learn to work with the company’s development tools and processes. Over time, as you demonstrate reliability and technical proficiency, you may be given ownership of more complex components or independent tasks. This structured approach helps you learn best practices, understand the codebase, and progressively build the confidence and experience needed for more advanced responsibilities.

Job description

Location: NYC MCR Corporate Office

MCR is hiring a Software Engineer to join our Technology team in our New York City office. As one of the country's largest hotel owner-operators, MCR builds the in-house software that runs its portfolio — so you'll see your work used daily to support decision-making across hundreds of properties.

The Software Engineer role is designed to work with the Technology team in building in-house software solutions and business applications. The position is a "full-stack" role where the individual is responsible for user-interface development, backend coding, and database design. This role is ideal for an experienced developer with a proven track record building full-stack web applications.

A significant portion of the work involves building out API integrations and middleware applications that move data across the company and connect our hospitality, finance, and operations systems. Projects range broadly in scope and audience, including:

  • Full-stack web applications deployed to over one hundred hotels across the portfolio
  • Corporate web utilities used by internal teams
  • An extensive fleet of API integrations powering BI tools, dashboards, and executive reporting

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship new features end-to-end across the full stack
  • Build and maintain API integrations and middleware connecting hospitality, finance, and operations systems
  • Maintain, extend, and improve existing in-house applications
  • Partner with stakeholders across Operations, Finance, and Revenue Management to translate business needs into reliable software
  • Own projects from initial design through deployment, writing clean and maintainable code and making thoughtful trade-offs around performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years writing object-oriented, testable PHP code
  • 3+ years developing web-based user interfaces with ReactJS
  • Experience using the Laravel PHP framework to develop full-stack web applications
  • Experience using TailwindCSS
  • Experience architecting on top of Amazon Web Services

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker)
  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
