Location: Must live within 100 miles from Lexington, MA - Hybrid - Individual will work from home or off-site for a portion of their schedule. The position is hybrid but candidates MUST be flexible and work on-site when required.

About the Role:

Aquila Technology is seeking a Software Developer to support one of the nation's premier defense research organizations. The team needs engineers who can ensure seamless development, integration, test and deployment of software from the tactical edge to cloud-based environments. The team succeed by participating in all phases of the program, including problem analysis and innovative solution design, system architecture, rapid prototyping and field-testing, and ultimately transfer of our technology. The team is currently seeking a Software Developer expert to support software prototyping, integration and deployment efforts aimed at improving Battle Management and information sharing for the DoW.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and integrating distributed data architecture solutions and implementing prototypes of relevant architectural elements to jump start transition and final production of capabilities.
  • Support modernization efforts which align with the Department of War (DoW) efforts for sharing data and information across multiple platforms and domains from the edge to the cloud environment.
  • Assess and integrate emerging technologies to support program initiatives.

Skills Required:

  • Proficiency in Python and/or Java
  • Proficiency with containers and container orchestration. Familiarity with Kubernetes, AWS deployment and associated tooling
  • Experience with pub-sub/streaming/event-based architectures (for example kafka, websocket, activemq)
  • Experience with distributed data architectures
  • Proficiency in AI-driven software development and test, including RAGs, MCP use, coding harnesses
  • Experienced in assessing state of the art DevSecOps technology to support and advise on new features, performance improvements, upgrades, and ongoing sustainment
  • Ability to work as part of a team applying agile development methods and CI/CD best practices and independently with minimal direction and oversight
  • Familiarity with web frameworks (for example, Angular, NodeJS, Django)
  • Have an active DoW Secret Clearance


Skills Preferred:

  • Familiarity with DoW interface standards for battle management, tactical networks or avionics
  • Proficiency in developing very large distributed systems applying techniques for low-latency system performance
  • Proficiency with React or other modern frontend framework
  • Experience with Data Bus, Data Ops, and Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) technologies
  • Proficiency with microservice based architectures
  • Proficiency with DevSecOps pipelines, practices, techniques, and technologies (for example jenkins and maven)
  • Skilled at analyzing a large, complex system to determine performance bottlenecks, application bugs, and opportunities to improve efficiency

Team members must achieve a grade of “B” or better to qualify for reimbursement.Aquila will reimburse up to $5,000 per fiscal year for tuition expenses only. Expenses related to training programs, certifications, books, materials, meals, transportation, or other non-tuition costs are not eligible under the Tuition Reimbursement Program. All tuition reimbursement requests must be submitted to and approved by the team member’s Manager prior to course registration. Reimbursement will be issued upon successful course completion and submission of final grades and proof of payment.

401K with Fidelity - Eligible to participate following 90 days of employment. Company match on employee contribution:

  • $1/$1 up to 3%, then .50 cents / $1 for 4th and 5th %s
  • Fully vested from day one
  • Company match does not apply to catch-up contribution

Cell Phone & Internet Reimbursed up to $150 monthly to cover cell phone, data, and home internet expenses. Aquila Technology will reimburse team members who work from home ONLY for cell phone/mobile device fees for work-related communications and/or operations each month. Employees eligible for this benefit must work remote 2 days a week or more to qualify.

Buy Your Own Device (BYOD) - Team members are eligible for reimbursement of up to $1,500 every three (3) years for the purchase of electronic equipment used to access corporate services. To qualify for this benefit, employees must have completed a minimum of six (6) months of employment and must agree to and sign the Device Minimum Configuration Form prior to reimbursement. Electronic devices eligible under the Buy Your Own Device (BYOD) program are limited to cell phones, laptops, and tablets.

Work location: Hybrid - Individual works from home or off-site for a portion of their schedule and within a routinely commutable distance from the Lexington facility. **The position is hybrid but candidates MUST be flexible and work on-site when required.

Interview Process: Initial zoom screen with hiring team, with follow on zoom interview with the broader team.

Experience Level: Seeking candidates with a minimum of three years of experience, however the group is open to and will consider more senior candidates (5-20 years of experience).

Clearance Level: Candidates must possess an Active Secret Clearance to be considered for this position.
