What does an Ubuntu on WSL software engineer do?

An Ubuntu on WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) Software Engineer specializes in developing, maintaining, and optimizing Ubuntu's compatibility and performance on the Windows Subsystem for Linux platform. They work to ensure that Ubuntu runs smoothly and integrates well with Windows environments, troubleshooting issues, and contributing to new features. This role often involves collaboration with both the Ubuntu and Microsoft WSL teams, as well as engaging with the open-source community to improve user experience and fix bugs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ubuntu on WSL software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ubuntu on WSL Software Engineer, you need strong knowledge of Linux systems, software development (especially in C/C++ or Python), and experience with both Windows and Ubuntu environments. Familiarity with tools like Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), scripting, virtualization, and debugging utilities is essential, along with relevant certifications such as CompTIA Linux+ or LPIC. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration skills help you navigate cross-platform challenges and work effectively in diverse teams. These competencies are crucial for building robust, compatible software solutions that bridge Windows and Linux ecosystems.

What are some common challenges faced by Ubuntu on WSL software engineers when integrating Linux applications with the Windows environment?

Ubuntu on WSL Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to compatibility between Linux and Windows systems, such as differing file system behaviors, permissions, and networking configurations. Debugging issues that arise from these differences can require a deep understanding of both operating systems. Additionally, ensuring that Linux applications perform reliably and efficiently within the WSL environment often involves troubleshooting edge cases and collaborating closely with both development and IT teams. Regular communication with upstream Linux and WSL communities can also be essential for staying updated on best practices and new features.

Job description

About the Job
Berkshire Grey is a leader in AI-enabled robotics, providing innovative automation solutions for e-commerce, retail replenishment, package handling, and logistics operations. Our technology automates complex warehouse tasks such as picking, packing, sorting, and trailer unloading.
As a Software Engineer on Berkshire Grey's Scoop robotic trailer-unloading program, you will design, implement, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain software that creates, integrates, and improves the system's robotic capabilities.
You will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop software that controls physical robotic behavior and coordinates the components required to unload packages safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role spans the complete software lifecycle, from defining and designing new capabilities through deployment, performance analysis, and support of systems operating in real-world customer environments.
This is an ideal role for a software engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems at the intersection of software, robotics, and physical automation-and who is motivated by seeing their work operate on real systems.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain software for Berkshire Grey's robotic trailer-unloading product.
  • Develop software components that control and coordinate robotic behavior and other physical system functions.
  • Translate product, system, and customer requirements into reliable and maintainable software solutions.
  • Work closely with robotics, controls, perception, hardware, systems, test, product, and field engineering teams.
  • Develop automated tests, simulation workflows, and system-level test methods to validate new capabilities.
  • Debug complex issues that span software, hardware, sensors, controls, and robotic behavior.
  • Analyze system performance and operational data to identify reliability, quality, and throughput improvements.
  • Support software integration, system commissioning, and troubleshooting on development and customer systems.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, sprint planning, and other engineering activities.
  • Improve software quality, observability, test coverage, deployment practices, and maintainability.
  • Document software designs, interfaces, operating behavior, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Communicate plans, progress, technical tradeoffs, and risks clearly to engineering stakeholders.
  • Travel to customer or development sites when needed to support integration, testing, deployment, and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of professional software development experience; or a master's degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • Strong software development expertise in Python and/or C++.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Experience developing software in a fast-paced Agile environment.
  • Experience developing software on Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Git-based version control and issue-tracking systems such as Jira.
  • Strong commitment to delivering well-designed, well-implemented, and thoroughly tested software that meets internal and customer requirements.
  • Ability to monitor and maintain deployed software to ensure reliability and quality.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Ability to work through ambiguous or loosely defined problems and independently scope, plan, and implement effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with robotics, industrial automation, or robotic material-handling systems.
  • Experience with parallel or distributed software systems.
  • Experience with asynchronous or concurrent programming, including Python Asyncio or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with messaging and communication technologies such as Kafka, gRPC, or similar systems.
  • Experience with software-based simulation tools and techniques.
  • Experience with ROS or ROS2.
  • Experience integrating software with sensors, actuators, programmable logic controllers, or other industrial hardware.
  • Familiarity with warehouse automation, logistics, package handling, or trailer-unloading applications.

Why Berkshire Grey?
  • Opportunity to work with cutting-edge AI-powered robotic solutions that are transforming the supply chain and logistics industry.
  • A culture of innovation and collaboration, with a commitment to professional development and growth.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.
