Position Summary
Assist the Manager, Network Infrastructure in managing all data network infrastructure for the University.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and manage data network services throughout all areas on all campuses:
    • Design, source, and install equipment, supplies, and tools in support of data network operations.
    • Design and install network infrastructure for all wired and wireless devices.
    • Manage multi-Gigabit redundant Internet connections and WAN connections.
    • Recommend infrastructure improvements based on sound best-practice principles.
  • Ensure maximum uptime with a goal of 24/7/365 at 100%.
    • Provide one-hour response for all network systems.
    • Lead and guide network staff, contractors, and co-workers in network problem resolution.
    • Monitor and track network usage to prevent problems or problem users.
    • Develop and maintain early warning systems.
    • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly checks of switches, transmission equipment, power supplies, temperature control systems, fire suppression systems, generators, circuits, connections, and related equipment.
  • Maintain standards and manage vendors:
    • Keep a set of living physical and logical network maps using Visio or similar mapping utility.
    • Develop and enforce best practices for installation and deployment of all hardware in all Data Centers and IDF closets.
    • Remain aware of security issues and early warning of breaches or usage violations.
    • Manage relationships with all vendors and outside contractors in support of active and passive network components.
  • Collaboration:
    • Manage the network component selection, cabling, and hardware standards for new construction and campus renovation projects.
    • Represent Networking in construction processes and other partnerships and enforce cabling/wireless installation standards through all phases of construction.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Other Attributes
  • Need to be on call 24 x 7 with flexible schedule.
  • In-depth Route/Switch and Data Center knowledge required, at least CCNA and preferably CCNP.
  • Experience working with Cisco WLC, ISE, DNA servers, and Smartnet licensing is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of TCP/IP, subnet masking, NAT, and QoS is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, and current routing protocols is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and VPNs is required.
  • Fluency with Cisco IOS and NX-OS required.
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware and software problems on switches and servers is required.
  • Project management experience, with strong leadership and diplomacy skills to meet critical targets amidst various internal/external factors is required.
  • Experience designing and deploying Cisco routers and switches required.
  • Experience designing and deploying Cisco 802.11n/ac/ax wireless access points required.
  • Experience troubleshooting wired and wireless network problems required.
  • Strong task prioritization skills required.
  • Diplomacy and tactful communication skills required.
  • Strong customer-service and queue-management skills required.
  • 2+ years direct hands-on experience administering a LAN/WAN environment required.
  • In-depth knowledge of Cisco Core/Distribution/Access Layer model required.
  • Experience with Palo Alto application layer firewall is a plus.
  • Experience with Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) is a plus.
  • Administration of SNMP-based systems is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Active Directory and/or LDAP is a plus.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a plus.
  • MCP, MCSE, and other Microsoft certifications are a plus.
