Job Summary

IMI is seeking a full-time Construction Estimator (Civil & Fabrication) local to the Athens, GA area.

Essential Functions

The Construction Estimator will prepare project cost estimates for the industrial contracting environment, to include Civil dirt and concrete work, new shop fabrications, and structural steel elements.  Focus would be on Civil dirt, site grading and concrete elements, but could involve field estimates for mechanical or structural support work.

  • Work alongside clients, departmental staff, material suppliers and subcontractors to formulate project cost estimates.
  • Analyze blueprints, specifications, construction drawings and other project documentation to prepare labor and material estimates.
  • Develop and maintain network of clients and vendors who provide bidding opportunities for the company.  Establish and maintain relationships with subcontractors for use in estimates.
  • Conduct Site/Bid walkthroughs.  Confer with Engineers, Designers, Owners, Contractors, and Subcontractors on preparing cost estimates and any changes to estimates as they are surfaced.
  • Conduct special studies to establish standard hour and related cost data driving cost reduction.
  • Review material and labor requirements to decide whether it is more cost-effective to construct or subcontract components.
  • work with the Shops on fabrication methodology, including jig construction, and assembly techniques.
  • Think critically to propose bid alternates, provide value engineering, and cost competitive solutions.
  • Prepare labor, material and subcontractor schedules of value and procurement and deployment projections.
  • Conduct high level scope reviews and project management briefs.
  • Prepare scopes of work based on verbal guidance of clients or at the direction of management.
  • Analyze historical bid data and actual project costs to continually improve estimating practices and procedures, in an effort to maximize success rate and profitability for the company.
  • Deliver Project Turnover Package for Project Management upon award of contract.  Provide ongoing project support as needed.
  • Work within company policy as outlined in the IMI Employee Handbook and in compliance with the Safety Manual and OSHA Safety rules.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of five years’ work experience in estimating civil grading/concrete work, shop fabrication and structural projects.
  • Computer experience, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Excel, Project, Outlook, Autocad and Bluebeam.
  • Procore experience is preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering or a similar field of study is preferred but not required. Prior experience as a substitute will be considered.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Use arms and hands to reach for, handle, or manipulate objects.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors during times of inclement weather.
  • Must be able to remain in a seated position for long periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity needed for repetitive tasks and operating standard office equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to work from a vehicle up to 25% of the time quoting/visiting customers.
  • Willingness to travel overnight up to 5% of the time.
