What is a Netflix Localization?

A Netflix Localization job involves adapting content—such as subtitles, dubbing, metadata, and marketing materials—into different languages and cultures to ensure a seamless viewing experience for global audiences. Localization specialists work with translators, linguists, and technical teams to maintain accuracy, cultural relevance, and quality across various regions. The role requires expertise in language, cultural nuances, and Netflix’s style guidelines to deliver an engaging and immersive experience for non-English speaking viewers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Netflix Localization position?

To thrive in Netflix Localization, you need expertise in translation, cultural adaptation, and project management, often supported by a degree in linguistics or a related field. Familiarity with localization software (such as SDL Trados, MemoQ, or Netflix's own proprietary tools), subtitling platforms, and quality assurance processes is commonly expected. Strong communication, collaboration skills, and keen attention to detail make candidates stand out when coordinating across global teams. These skills ensure high-quality, culturally relevant content that meets Netflix's audience expectations worldwide.

What are some of the main challenges faced in a Netflix Localization role?

One of the primary challenges in a Netflix Localization role is ensuring translation accuracy and cultural relevance for diverse, global audiences while meeting tight production deadlines. You’ll often need to coordinate with content creators, linguists, and technical teams to resolve ambiguities in scripts and maintain consistency across languages and regions. The fast-paced nature of new releases and constant content updates also requires adaptability and excellent organizational skills. However, these challenges are balanced by the opportunity to work on high-visibility projects and develop expertise in global entertainment markets.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what's next.
The Role
This role sits as a horizontal function within the Design Systems organization, a team dedicated to enabling product quality, consistency, and design velocity across all of Netflix.
As we shift toward an agent-first architecture, our design system is evolving. We're moving beyond buttons and static strings to build the underlying scaffolding that lets AI agents and product experiences communicate safely, naturally, and distinctively across every Netflix surface, in every language, for every audience.
We're looking for a Staff Systems Designer specializing in language to serve as Netflix's centralized authority for scaling language standards. Rather than creating Netflix's voice and tone guidelines, this role will own how those standards are structurally encoded into the design system. This role bridges the gap between editorial craft and technical frameworks, translating subjective brand guidelines into the objective, machine-readable rules and patterns that guide both human writers and dynamic generative agents.
Role Responsibilities
  • Serve as the centralized authority for language standards across Consumer, driving system-level alignment across a decentralized content design community.
  • Translate brand and editorial guidelines into objective, systematic rules that guide both human authors and AI agents.
  • Own taxonomy and terminology schemas to ensure semantic and naming consistency across components, localization pipelines, and dynamic content generators.
  • Establish the authoritative logic and rules for reusable content patterns, defining the variables that keep text on-brand.
  • Author and govern language specifications, variables, and constraints structurally embedded in Hawkins components across platforms.
  • Build the plug-and-play extension model that allows decentralized business domains to safely apply unique voice requirements within shared guardrails.
  • Partner with localization, legal, and accessibility to translate complex compliance and functional requirements into clear, system-level design constraints.
  • Coordinate the release lifecycle of encoded language schemas and rules to downstream product teams and intelligent agents.

Role Qualifications
At Netflix, all roles are expected to exemplify the values outlined in our culture. Below are some specific behaviors, experiences, and skills to be successful in this role.
  • 10+ years of experience as a Content Systems leader, with a demonstrated track record of owning and scaling a content standards function, not just contributing to one.
  • You have built systems other teams depend on: experience creating programmatic style guides, evaluation frameworks, reusable UI patterns, or rule-based terminology systems that became the authoritative source of truth for an entire organization.
  • Proven track record of navigating competing organizational priorities across product, legal, brand, and localization, and successfully translating those disparate requirements into consensus-driven system guardrails.
  • Direct experience with LLM orchestration, prompt engineering, or AI-assisted writing workflows, with a pragmatic point of view on how to programmatically constrain generative models so outputs remain safe and on-brand.
  • Fluency at the intersection of editorial craft and technical system infrastructure: You know how to define clear communication guidelines, but you also understand how those rules map to a JSON schema, metadata pipeline, or platform component.
  • Deep understanding of localization and accessibility as structural constraints, with experience building core frameworks that naturally scale across languages, regions, and assistive technology contexts.

Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $340,000.00 - $480,000.00. This compensation range will vary based on location.
Netflix provides comprehensive benefits including Health Plans, Mental Health support, a 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer match, Stock Option Program, Disability Programs, Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts, Family-forming benefits, and Life and Serious Injury Benefits. We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off. Full-time salaried employees are immediately entitled to flexible time off. See more details about our Benefits here.
Netflix is a unique culture and environment. Learn more here.
Inclusion is a Netflix value and we strive to host a meaningful interview experience for all candidates. If you want an accommodation/adjustment for a disability or any other reason during the hiring process, please send a request to your recruiting partner.
We are an equal-opportunity employer and celebrate diversity, recognizing that diversity builds stronger teams. We approach diversity and inclusion seriously and thoughtfully. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, ancestry, national origin, caste, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, age, disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic makeup, marital status, or military service.
Job is open for no less than 7 days and will be removed when the position is filled.
