What does a NetApp consultant do?

A NetApp Consultant is an IT professional who specializes in designing, implementing, and managing NetApp storage solutions for organizations. They assess clients' data storage needs, recommend appropriate NetApp products, and help with installation, configuration, and ongoing support. NetApp Consultants also provide guidance on data backup, disaster recovery, and optimizing storage performance. Their expertise ensures that businesses can securely store and efficiently access their data while maximizing the value of their NetApp investments.

What are some common challenges faced by NetApp consultants during client deployments?

Netapp Consultants often encounter challenges such as integrating Netapp storage solutions with diverse and sometimes legacy IT environments, ensuring data migration occurs with minimal downtime, and tailoring configurations to meet unique client performance and compliance needs. Effective communication and collaboration with client IT teams are essential, as consultants must clarify technical requirements, manage expectations, and address unforeseen obstacles. Staying updated with the latest Netapp technologies and best practices also helps consultants deliver optimal solutions in dynamic enterprise environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a NetApp consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Netapp Consultant, you need in-depth knowledge of storage systems, data management, and backup solutions, usually supported by degrees in IT or computer science and relevant NetApp certifications (such as NCDA or NCIE). Expertise in NetApp ONTAP, SAN/NAS environments, virtualization platforms, and cloud integration tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with clients and technical teams help set top consultants apart. These competencies ensure effective deployment, support, and optimization of NetApp solutions to meet diverse client needs.

While both roles require storage knowledge and certifications, Netapp Consultants typically have a broader consulting focus, whereas Storage Engineers are more involved in day-to-day system management.

How do I get into a Netapp consultant career?

To become a NetApp consultant, candidates typically need a strong understanding of data storage, networking, and data management concepts, along with experience working with NetApp storage solutions. Earning relevant certifications such as the NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA) can improve job prospects. Job description

LOCATION

This role is based in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area, and we are only considering candidates who currently reside in the region. Candidates outside of this area will not be considered.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Enterprise Majors is a strategic segment within NetApp's Enterprise organization, purpose-built to accelerate growth within some of our largest and most complex customers. Rather than supporting a broad territory, Enterprise Majors focuses on going deeper within a select number of enterprise accounts by uncovering new workloads, expanding existing relationships, and creating whitespace opportunities across the business.

Each Enterprise Majors Solutions Engineer is paired 1:1 with an Enterprise Client Executive, forming a highly collaborative account team responsible for driving technical strategy, pipeline creation, and long-term customer success. Together, you'll combine technical expertise with consultative selling to identify business challenges, shape opportunities, and deliver solutions that help customers modernize how they manage and leverage their data.

Success in this role requires equal parts technical credibility, commercial curiosity, and a proactive mindset. Our best Solutions Engineers don't simply respond to opportunities they help create them.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Partner 1:1 with an Enterprise Client Executive to develop and execute strategic account plans focused on deeper penetration, broader platform adoption, and net-new workload acquisition.
  • Lead consultative discovery conversations that uncover technical challenges, business initiatives, and organizational priorities across both technical and executive stakeholders.
  • Translate customer business objectives into solution strategies leveraging the breadth of the NetApp portfolio.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor while helping identify, shape, and advance new sales opportunities throughout the customer lifecycle.
  • Support account planning, opportunity qualification, and pipeline progression using structured sales methodologies such as MEDDICC.
  • Deliver compelling technical presentations, demonstrations, workshops, and proof-of-concepts aligned to customer business outcomes.
  • Build strong relationships with enterprise architects, infrastructure leaders, IT executives, and cross-functional business stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with NetApp specialists, product teams, professional services, and channel partners to deliver the right technical expertise at the right stage of the sales cycle.
  • Recognize when to leverage internal specialists for deep technical design while maintaining ownership of the overall customer engagement.
  • Stay current on industry trends, competitive technologies, hybrid cloud, AI, data infrastructure, and emerging customer workloads.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 7+ years of experience in Solutions Engineering, Sales Engineering, Pre-Sales Engineering, Solution Consulting, or similar customer-facing technical sales roles.
  • Experience supporting large enterprise or Fortune 1000 customers through complex technology sales cycles.
  • Demonstrated success partnering with enterprise sales teams to drive strategic opportunities from discovery through close.
  • Experience supporting enterprise infrastructure environments, including storage, data management, hybrid cloud, virtualization, backup, data protection, or adjacent infrastructure technologies.
  • Strong understanding of modern enterprise data infrastructure and how organizations leverage technology to support business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to translate technical capabilities into measurable business value.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience leading consultative discovery and value-based customer conversations across both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with enterprise sales methodologies such as MEDDICC, account planning, and structured opportunity qualification.
  • Experience working alongside channel partners, system integrators, or strategic reseller organizations.
  • Ability to build foundational solution architectures while collaborating with technical specialists on highly complex solution design.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and passion for emerging technologies including AI, hybrid cloud, cyber resilience, and modern data management.

Compensation:
The target salary range for this position is 223,550 - 289,300 USD. The salary offered will be determined by the candidate's location, qualifications, experience, and education and may be outside of this range. The range is based on 'On Target Earnings' (OTE) representing the total potential earnings, which is the sum of the base salary and potential commission earned when performance targets are achieved. Final compensation packages are competitive and in line with industry standards, reflecting a variety of factors, and include a comprehensive benefits package. This may cover Health Insurance, Life Insurance, Retirement or Pension Plans, Paid Time Off, various Leave options, employee stock purchase plan, and/or restricted stocks (RSU's).
