Job description

Stambaugh Ness is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Manager to join our growing Individual Tax & Owner Advisory practice. In this role, you will serve as a trusted advisor to business owners, executives, and high-net-worth individuals, providing sophisticated tax planning, compliance, and consulting services.
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with firm leadership, lead complex client engagements, mentor developing professionals, and collaborate across multiple specialty practices to deliver comprehensive solutions that create long-term value for clients.

What You'll Do at SN:
Tax Planning & Advisory
  • Serve as a technical leader for individual and owner-level taxation matters.
  • Advise business owners and executives on tax planning strategies, including:
    • Pass-through entity taxation
    • Estimated tax planning
    • Compensation planning
    • State and local tax considerations
    • Succession and exit planning
    • Wealth preservation strategies
  • Review tax projections and planning analyses that support client decision-making.
  • Research complex tax issues and provide practical recommendations.

Client Relationship Management
  • Build trusted relationships with clients and serve as a strategic advisor throughout the year.
  • Participate in planning discussions related to tax, business, and ownership matters.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, financial planners, bankers, investment advisors, and other external professionals.
  • Identify opportunities to provide additional value through the firm's advisory, technology, and outsourced accounting services.

Compliance & Technical Review
  • Review complex individual, fiduciary, gift, and related tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1041, and 709.
  • Ensure engagements are completed accurately, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Maintain high standards of technical quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Stay informed on tax law developments affecting business owners, trusts, estates, and executives.

Leadership & Team Development
  • Mentor, coach, and develop Tax Managers, Senior Associates, and Staff.
  • Provide technical guidance and review work product to support professional growth.
  • Contribute to training initiatives, process improvements, and best practices within the tax practice.
  • Help drive operational excellence, scalability, and quality across engagements.

What you may have done before:
  • Worked successfully in a fully remote environment.
  • Worked within the Tax Department of a leading professional service firm.
  • Worked within the AEC industry.

What it takes to be a Senior Tax Manager - Individual Tax:
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Active CPA or EA license
  • 7+ years of public accounting tax experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of:
    • Individual taxation
    • Fiduciary taxation
    • Partnership taxation
    • S corporation taxation
    • Owner-level tax planning
  • Experience reviewing complex Forms 1040, 1041, and 709.
  • Experience advising closely held business owners and executives.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to mentor and develop professionals across multiple levels.

Preferred
  • Master's in Taxation (MST), J.D., or LL.M. in Taxation.
  • Experience serving architecture, engineering, construction (AEC), or professional services clients.
  • Experience supporting mergers and acquisitions, succession planning, or wealth preservation strategies.
  • Personal Financial Specialist (PFS), CFP®, or similar advisory credential.
  • Experience with tax technology platforms such as CCH Axcess, GoSystem, or ProSystem fx.
  • Demonstrated success driving process improvements and practice scalability initiatives.

Salary: The salary range for this position is an estimate of $141,000 - $170,000. A final compensation offer within this range will be based on factors including an individual's skill sets, experience, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and geography.
