Job description
The Alaska Native Studies program is seeking an adjunct instructor for, among other courses, AKNS/MUS A218B, Drum making techniques in the Inupiaq and Yup'ik style. Adjunct instructors are hired on a semester-by-semester appointment. Qualified applicants for this position will be placed into a hiring pool from which instructors will be hired as needed. Acceptance into the hiring pool does not constitute an offer of an appointment, nor does having worked one semester guarantee that a position will be available the following semester; hiring decisions are made on a semester-by-semester basis according to the needs of that semester's schedule. Candidates will be evaluated on past teaching experience, potential for providing high quality instruction to undergraduate students in either traditional knowledge or an academic focus in Indigenous or Alaska Native Studies. Adjunct faculty with semester assignments are subject to evaluation for teaching effectiveness.
Candidates must be available to work within Alaska during the length of any assignment.
A successful candidate will have experience teaching at the college level or extensive teaching experience in a traditional knowledge setting such as a cultural center. Successful candidates have passion for sharing their knowledge with students and the broader community and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, staff, faculty, administration, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master's degree in a closely related field for lower division (100- and 200-level) courses or a Doctorate or terminal degree in a closely related field for upper division (300- and 400-level) courses.
Expertise and experience relevant to teaching the specific course content. Exceptions may be made when prospective faculty have equivalent traditional knowledge and experience of Alaska Native issues and cultures - historical and contemporary, or Alaska Native Arts, subject to the approval of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Experience teaching at the college level is preferred.
Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting academic credentials required for the position as a condition of employment.
