Job description

Cardiac Cath Nurse

Responsible for providing quality nursing care to patients of the Cardiac Cath area while utilizing the nursing process, and acts as a liaison between the Cardiac Cath area and the nursing units to provide continuity of care and optimal communication.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Provide direct patient care, including examination and treatment, under an approved protocol. Evaluate outcomes and adjust nursing care processes as needed to ensure optimal patient care.

2. Evaluate patient medical record and assess lab data to ensure patient preparedness for planned procedure. Ensure that necessary paperwork (electronic record) is complete to initiate procedure.

3. Utilize the nursing process to implement goal-directed nursing care for a defined group of patients.

4. Prepare procedure room to ensure that equipment is functioning properly and maintain a record of equipment used and procedures done.

5. Monitor medical condition of assigned patients at all times and report to Physician or designee any patient care problems, changes in condition or unexpected occurrences.

6. Educate patients/family regarding condition, treatment, discharge/transfer planning and follow-up examinations if needed. Seek feedback from patients/family to evaluate understanding and document.

7. Assist physician with specialized procedures including, diagnostic, pacemaker insertion, interventional, administering medication, positioning catheters, and removing arterial and venous sheaths.

8. Anticipate and participate in emergency procedures as necessary.

9. Perform a variety of nursing skills in compliance with physician orders and established Hospital policies and procedures.

10. Communicate with physicians and other departments to consult on patient status and to ensure continuity of care.

11. Respond to cases of cardiopulmonary arrest, fire, disaster or other emergencies in accordance with established procedures.

12. Assume responsibility for own professional development, setting goals and striving to achieve them through available resources, such as attending seminars, in-service training, and/or reading journals.

13. Participate in data collection for national registries in regards to primary angioplasty quality assurance programs.

14. Act as a liaison between the Cardiac Cath Lab and other professional staff.

15. Maintain and order supplies as necessary to perform job.

16. Performs all other related duties as assigned.

17. Participate in on call rotation.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited nursing program and a minimum of three years job-related experience or equivalent is required. Current BLS, ACLS certification and RI State Licensure is also required. Experience must include at least 3 years critical care experience. Knowledge of IABP concepts required.
